If you like whiskey and good food this is the place you want to find yourself. They literally have an iconic whiskey wall with countless of great selections ranging from American whiskey,Scotch, Japanese whiskey and much more.

The food is amazing and they are a sister restaurant to Little Bad Wolf so you know their burger is going to be insanely good and it did not disappoint. I am convinced this place has one of the best beef tar tar I have tasted accompanied with delicious bread. The combination of soft tar tar and the crunch of the bread is amazing. Nachos are also a great bite if you’re having out at the bar area and they also had flavorful oysters.

Staff is awesome very friendly and always willing to help you out with recommendations on food and whiskey.

I have been here multiple times and can say I will continue to keep coming as long as they keep providing the amazing drinks, food, and service.

Great music, awesome staff and delicious food. The rib appetizer and the elote had so much flavor. We both had the burger and it was great. The fries were on the skinny side and they were a little overdone but the dipping sauce made up for it. We will definitely be back.

Gretel has incredibly great food and the vibe is cool. There is atmospheric art and music and lighting. The wall of liquor is amazing. The main thing is that it has one of the best burgers in Chicago. Seriously delicious. The Mac and Cheese is hands down the best I’ve ever had. The wait said 1 hour but there were bar seats right away. We lucked out.

Celebrated our daughter’s birthday at Gretel. As good a gastro pub as I’ve been to. French Dip with thinly sliced prime rib was to die for. My wife’s chicken sandwich was amazing with crisp chicken bulging out of both sides. Love their fries too. Great spot in Logan Square.

The burger was so good! Full of flavor, add the bacon and the bun was perfect to hold all the juiciness in. I hate when the bun falls apart and this bun did not. Drinks were well balanced and our liver pate appetizer was delicious and filling. I should’ve came more hungry. Service was friendly and timely. Parking can be a bit of a challenge.

Gretel is a much-hyped spot with an expected long wait due to no reservations. Plan accordingly and be prepared for a 2+ hour wait at peak time, and there are plenty of fun spots within walking distance to get a drink while you wait.

Once we were sat, our server was great! Kind and attentive without being overbearing, I always appreciate when we’re left to linger at the table and have a drink before placing food orders and not feeling rushed.

We split the Gretel burger (when in Rome, right?) and the chopped salad. Both were delicious!

The chopped salad is a very hefty portion, better to split amongst 4 people rather than two since we left half of it behind. The cheese ratio was too heavy on the salad (and I can’t believer I’m saying the words “too much cheese”) while the dressing was too sparse.

The burger lives up to the hype for a reason, and nothing more needs to be said beyond YUM!

Gretel is open late and on our way out at about 11pm, things were winding down. So it’s good to keep in mind for when you’re craving a late night bite beyond the usual fast food spots.

Overall, Gretel maintains the reasons it’s well-regarded and I will return to expand my menu choices!

Amazing food! The wait was long, there were 19 people ahead of us and it took us an hour and a half to get a table. The lobster roll was amazing, the bone marrow and Elote are a must have. The burger was 10/10. I have had lobster rolls in Maine and this one was as good as those.

We came for the Gretel Griddle Burger, and it absolutely delivered. The patty was perfectly cooked and juicy, the buns were delicious, and the sauce tied everything together beautifully. The place is decorated more like a whiskey or beer bar, but the burger is definitely the star. The only minor downside is that the lower floor feels a bit enclosed and dark.

We came here because it had good reviews on the burgers and it did not disappoint. Simple and delicious! I also tried the prime rib French dip and Brussel sprouts. Everything was great.

The sky was dark, the air was cold, and my family was hungry after driving a few hours to visit me in Chicago over the holidays. After hearing whispers of Gretel’s excellence amongst my peers, I decided it was the perfect time to share an intimate, culinary experience with those whom I love. Gretel provided us with an upscale and unique twist on traditional American cuisine. Our experience consisted of plenty of smiles, laughs , and a well needed sense of satiation. As an Eastern European food connoisseur new to the Chicago area, I have carefully constructed a rating system that reflects my personal thoughts, feelings, and experience.

Food: 9/10

Six of us attended this dinner so we were able were able to test a good portion of this menu. I’m glad we had a large party because we were able to share a variety of dishes, and it was clear that each dish was well thought out by the folks at Gretel.

Ramen – The broth was savory and smooth. The additives were what you would expect of ramen, but all the ingredients came together in harmony. Just a few sips soothed the small amount of nasal congestion that I was experiencing.

Wedge and Chopped Salad – both were great, but what I would expect from each salad. These salads both came with A TON of dressing which is great for most people, but my family typically goes much lighter on the dressing. The wedge salad had a great blue cheese dressing, and it was easy to remove the excess off each wedge, making it our favorite salad. The Chopped salad also came with an excessive amount of dressing which was much harder to set aside based on the structure of the salad. Both were great, but it was probably the least favorite thing we ordered.

Burger (medium rare) – This entrée is up there with one of the best burgers in Chicago and can easily be shared upon request. I usually like my burgers done medium, but the recommended medium rare worked perfect in the flavor profile. The burger was rich and savory, but not something that would make you feel like you had to lay down and take a nap afterward. The burger came with a side of fries which tasted great but were missing the crisp that I usually enjoy. I would highly recommend ordering this.

French Dip – My parents ordered this to share, but I unfortunately was not offered a bite. In their words it was “The best French dip we have ever had”.

Mac and Cheese – We ordered this side for the table to share. It looked stunning, yet small. The dish was an absolute delicacy and probably the best mac and cheese I have ever had. You only need a bite or two of this rich dish to feel completely satisfied.

Drinks 10/10

While the food was incredible, they have a beer selection that is top-notch compared to other Chicago area restaurants. The draft selection left a little smile on my face as I went down the list. I was happy to see their local selections and some pretty elite, out of state breweries such as Surly (out of Minnesota) which have perfected their craft in the beer industry.
They seemed that they had many great cocktails and an extensive offering of wines as well.

Atmosphere: 9/10

The upstairs was a high end and classy bar aesthetic, but we dined down in the basement. The basement had cool brick walls with dim lighting. The dim lighting was complimented by some rather unique lamps that they had on display. The basement had a very comforting and modern speakeasy vibe to it.

Likelihood of Return 10/10

The food was amazing and will bring us back here again. The beer selection they offer is amazing and not something commonly found in the Chicago area. They do an amazing job, and I think this will become a new date spot for my fiancé and I.

You guys are the best,

George Clydesdale
