We recently visited Smuggler’s Cove and had a mixed experience. The service was honestly the highlight of the visit, the staff was very attentive, friendly, and checked in often, which we really appreciated. The drinks were also decent and came out quickly. Unfortunately, the food did not meet expectations. The lobster mac and cheese was barely edible and had a strong fish-market smell, and several of the other seafood dishes had a similar odor and taste. Overall, the food quality just didn’t match the great level of service.

If the kitchen improves consistency and freshness, this place could be much better, because the front-of-house team is doing a great job.

Had dinner at Smugglers Cove while spending the weekend skiing at Camelback Resort, and I’m so glad we stopped in! The Chesapeake Bay soup, oysters, and Alfredo Royale were all fantastic, and the cocktails were great too. Big thanks to our server Michelle for her excellent service. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re in town!

Food:

The food was astronomical. So many options, it’s almost impossible to choose and everything tastes differently and it makes you want to order everything. I tried so many dishes, this review would be bottomless if I list them all. To name a few, I ordered regular fries and truffle fries and tasted the difference. The truffle fries had a lot more flavor than the regular. Fun fact about truffles, they are mushrooms. Why is that important? Because fun fact number 2: a kilogram of truffles is worth more than a kilogram of solid GOLD. Don’t worry, the fries are just sprinkled in truffle so they don’t cost as much as gold, and they are definitely on the “to do” list. I also recommend anything with see food including alligator bites. You read right. They serve alligator meat, and it tastes really good. Heads up though, it’s hard to cut do you have to pull it apart instead of trying to bite off a piece.

Service:

Susan was really nice and gave us a lot of advice for what to order and checked in often. Compliments to her and the chef!

Atmosphere:

Kind of feels like when you go into a middle age tavern or diner. Very calm and nice, but the cameras and speakers and music broke me out of my day dream and reminded me that I’m in the 21st century.

My husband ordered $100 Tomahawk steak. They brought it out and he tasted it. He asked me to try it. We both said it was kind of funky tasting. I asked the waitress to see if the steak was aged or cooked in wine. Because, that will often make food taste odd. She came out and replied. “The cook said no the steaks had just arrived that morning.”The steak tasted bad like it was rancid. I ordered the Chilean Sea bass. I think, they sent the stripper instead. It was dry from being overcooked and my mashed potatoes that came with the meal were cold. The conch fritters were not worth trying. The bits of shellfish were extremely chewy not prepared well at all. The alligator was different. Though, I expected it to be. The best thing we had that evening was the calamari. Although it was lukewarm when it arrived at the table. We ended up leaving everything. Paying for half the check because my husband did not want leave there without some kind of payment for the transaction. I do not recommend this establishment. Very disappointed.

My prime rib sandwich is everything i could have ever dreamed of. So delicious. And my server Dom the dream boat was very attentive and well spoken. He made sure I was enjoying my experience every step of the way. Could not have had a better experience.

My wife and I have been dining at Smuggler’s Cove Restaurant for many years and are long time members of the local community. The food and service during our recent visit was good. However, the way a promotion was handled by the onsite manager was unacceptable.

The restaurant advertises “26% off all food and alcohol from 2:30–5:30 PM.” To confirm the promotion was active, I called about 15 minutes before arriving and the hostess confirmed that it was (see image). Before the bill came, I thought to remind the waiter, who then told us the discount was built into the system and would automatically appear on the bill. When the check arrived the only discount applied was $2 off the wine, and none of the food items received the advertised discount.

I asked the waiter about it pointing out the mistake and he checked with the manager. The manager was shown the advertisement stating “26% off all food and alcohol,” but still refused to honor the promotion, now saying it only applied to certain foods even though no exclusions appear in the advertisement.

My wife and I are in the marketing and advertising industry, so we are fully aware of advertisement laws such as “all” as absolute wording. Previous ownership and management were customer-focused and willing to resolve issues especially when the error falls on the establishment and you are dealing with repeat customers.

We paid the bill and left. We hope ownership does review both the promotion and how their current management handles customers so other guests do not experience the same issue. It is not as much about the discount because we have eaten there many years without considering discount, it was and is about false and misleading advertisement and the way the matter was handled by management to us a customers.

What are fun surprise of a restaurant! It’s definitely a townie kind of place that looks it’s age, but with very delicious food. The only let down was the service. Stood at the host stand with 3 people behind it for a couple minutes before we were even acknowledged. Our server was a bit slow, and after food was dropped, didn’t show back up until we were done.
Everything we are was very very delicious. Not what I expected in the middle of Pennsylvania. The oysters were slightly dried out because I’m sure they were shucked ahead of time for the dinner rush. Would like to see a mignonette with them though. Alligator was a bit tough but very good. I would recommend if you are in the area.

Food was great, was very pleased with our specials in particular. Most impressed with the service: Jen was fantastic as our server. Tony wasn’t our server but he was kind enough to also stop by. Both were very fun and made our experience better. Jen was quick and attentive to our needs. Recommend for anyone in the area! Best meal of the trip
