What happened to the Cafe Rio on 400 S in downtown SLC? Did it quietly give up on life?
The service has gone downhill, the food quality keeps sliding, and the cleanliness… whew. I’ve seen gas stations with higher hygiene standards.
The employees looked deeply unhappy to be there, and judging by the state of their aprons (absolutely disgusting) I kind of get it. If you’re going to serve food, maybe don’t look like you just lost a wrestling match with the queso.
The dining area was next-level gross. Food everywhere on the floor, trash cans overflowing like they were staging a protest, and zero urgency from anyone to clean it up. I genuinely considered calling the SLC Health Department because this felt less like a restaurant and more like a biohazard with tortillas.
Being served felt less “fast-casual Mexican” and more “prison cafeteria vibes,” where food is slapped together with all the care and warmth of a court-mandated lunch break. We didn’t feel like a customer. We felt like an inconvenience. The drinks area was also a disaster. Half of the sodas were out and these horchata machines looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in months!
Cafe Rio, this location needs help!!! Or supervision!! Do they have a manager?? This location has been disgusting for several months now. I keep on coming back hoping it will get better but I am mostly giving up. I was talking to my co workers and showed them some of the pictures and they were shocked of how dirty and messy the place was!

I’ve been out of the country for a year and all I wanted was the delicious comfort of Cafe Rio! How disappointing! The lettuce on my tostada was mushy and wilted. There was hardly any chicken, and the rest of the ingredients tasted overly seasoned. Food aside, the workers were quick, but it was a depressed atmosphere. Not the experience I remember loving and standing in line for. I remember Cafe Rio for being delicious, happy, positive, lively and fun. This experience was a downer. I think I’ll pass, sadly.

So very this review is entirely dependent on who is working. Theres one lady that works on taking your order and making the food and she absolutely sucks at it. Will sometimes mess up the order with wrong ingredients and give attitude when you ask her to fix it, give the smallest portion size possible, change extra when you try to ask for a reasonable amount of food, rushes so you barely have time to ask for anything in between the steps of making the food, and fold the burrito so awfully they fall apart immediately. If I learn her name then i’ll update my review with it, and if you see her working just leave as you’ll get a poor experience.
NOW THO, if the guy worker is on shift (I’ll grab his name too eventually) then this review is gonna be a 5 star. He gives fantastic portion sizes, great customer service, listens and correct any mistakes he might make, and is overall better at making the food than the previously mentioned employee.

In case you were reading the previous reviews. Yes, they did give up at this location.
The cashier, great, the girl helping, good. The guy with glasses, helping us at the beginning was good until he said there was no steak anymore and for future knowledge, they will no longer be cooking steak that late anymore. When the lady behind was cooking steak and cutting it up. By the time we were paying she put the cooked steak in the front for other customers to get. The food was a one star because this was for a woman who barely had baby. If they would have said hey, it’s going to be a wait, we would have waited but he just straight up said no.

WOW. Please do not order delivery through the Cafe Rio app. We have tried two times this week. The first time, our order was canceled after an hour of no communication and because it was contracted through DoorDash, getting help or a refund was so confusing. We tried again today thinking it was a weather issue; nope. We watched the driver circle the store for an hour without being able to reach him. Cafe Rio directed us to DoorDash support who couldn’t explain the delay and couldn’t cancel the order. They sent us BACK to Cafe Rio to discuss potential refund. This time Jasmine (I think) was able to help us cancel it and refund it, and she was really competent and appreciated. We will certainly be back in person for dine in or pick up, but their partnership with DoorDash through the app seems to have a disconnect and makes finding support such a complicated process. Thank you to the store for hearing our concerns!

Sweet pork burrito was spectacular. It never disappoints, but also there are several other items that are really good. Sweet pork nachos, the chicken, quesadilla, steak tacos are all highly recommend.
The restrooms were clean and available. No waiting. Seating was spacious. I didn’t feel cramped in like some down town places.
D don’t like the ordering kiosk. It is very impersonal and hard to get your order just the way you like it. Avoid if possible.
Live cafe Rio!

My parents went in to order the family some burritos. The employee that was working was rude! My dad told him he needed 5 chicken burritos. The employee looked at him and said 5? You do know we have an app right? He looked super annoyed to have to make the same order. Then he put the containers on top of all of the tortillas contaminating them.

Employees were great and helpful! The restaurant was clean and has great tasting food. The service was quick! The speciality drinks were empty so I had to settle for a fountain but overall it’s a great location!

Weird liminal space ahh restaurant, with staff with the weirdest energy. Came in AN HOUR before close, they were out of rice (still some they could scrape tho and oh i asked) and I said i was willing to wait. When i tell you this girl SIGHED and gave me the worst attitude. I waited 10 minutes and she was still giving me attitude. “What beans. ” no “sorry for the wait” or anything. Record breaking bad service to where I was giving attitude, and I’m usually very nice. I go back to get a lid and usually there’s lids in the lobby but nooooo. A DIFFERENT girl sighs when i asked for a lid. Like i said “get me out of here before i throw hands” to my group bc that was so bad. OH! And a random crunchy piece in my burrito… never coming again that was a record breaking low I’ve never felt like that. And i didn’t even write everything out of what happened and what they said, just the gist.

Menu board is hung directly overhead of the customer so it is hard to see. There is no menu to look at before you get there. It is also a hard to follow menu. I guess what I’m getting at, it might be a good idea to review the menu and its flow. Just to help the customers and increase sales. I think it would also help the staff in food preparation at the line.
