I’m happy to say that having gone to Charminar Express for over a year now, since the day they opened, I am shocked that we have yet to have a single dish there that was anything other than very good, and have had several that would qualify as excellent to superb.
I have tried every one of Charminar’s chicken curries. Several of their biryanis, their tandoori, their assorted chicken appetizers, several of their fish curries, three of their breads, their pulao, a couple of vegetable side dishes, and even the mutton.
That each one of them maintained a distinction between the others is high praise. Too often, regardless of the meat or vegetable, sauce entrees at some Indian restaurants can look and taste almost indistinct from one another. That’s happily not the case here.
The four of us who’ve been dining together and separately at Charminar at least once a month for the past year have been pleasantly surprised and satisfied. The communication problems that plagued ordering during their first month have long disappeared —and if you have any questions about a dish a quick online search will tell you almost everything you need to know.
The portions here are also such that even with just two of us, we have enough left over for a second meal for virtually every entree or appetizer we order. That the restaurant also offers occasional weekend specials is another welcome feature.
The only real criticism we would add is that their naan bread —an essential item for enjoying complex sauces— could be fresher and hotter. Also, the tandoori (not their specialty) is acceptable rather than praiseworthy.
Indian street food has become more and more popular as immigrants from different areas of the subcontinent have been making themselves present here over the last decade. But, sadly sometimes such places cut corners and you have to learn which to avoid.
I’ve been enjoying Indian cuisine since the early 1990s. I’ve had it in four countries and in half a dozen states. So I’m particular in that I will enjoy the spicier dishes and tend to avoid the common buffets where items are typically reduced down to the lowest common denominator pallet. The best Indian restaurants are ones you see Indians themselves dining at. And there are many different types of regional cuisines. It’s hardly all the same. It’s quite diverse, more so than Mexican food, for comparison.
Charminar advertises itself as “Hyderabadi cuisine” —a style which emphasises bold, layered flavors using spices such as cumin, cardamon, coriander, dry coconut, saffron, ginger, tamarind, and red chilies. This is the reason why it can be so unfamiliar to the uninitiated diner.
Anyone who says that they “don’t like Indian food” because it’s “too spicy” (…yet will regularly order hot wings and peppery Mexican salas) is depriving themselves. Indian cuisine simply uses different seasonings (and in a greater quantity) than Westerners are use to or familiar with. But they grow on you very quickly. Hot peppers are actually not that common in most Indian dishes. Just the occasional dried red chili —which you can request be limited. To say you don’t like curry, is like saying you don’t like tomato sauce —there are dozens of varieties with unique flavors. The “curry” in curry dishes is merely one leafy seasoning among many.
So, do yourself a favor and enjoy this local gem. It is a stand out offer in our small town. But do understand, this is not fast food. It’s slow food. Even though it’s a simple place that is ideal for takeout, be patient and give yourself extra time when placing an order. Try sharing a few chicken appetizers first, rather than a curry stew with rice.
To not be disappointed in a restaurant today is saying a lot. But to be consistently pleased and even repeatedly impressed as we have at Charminar is almost a glorious thing to proclaim.
That they have recently started serving dishes on actual ceramic plates and bowls, rather than styrofoam, is also a
Malai kofta was really tasty and balanced. Veg Dum biryani has really nice taste but felt that rice was different than what I have eaten on other biryani places. They were thick and short, not long ones. Also garlic naan and was the one that I did not like. These can be better.
Overall good experience overall.
The food taste was very very bad.we ordered one dish they bought another so worst taste My dish arrived lukewarm, and the flavors were bland and unbalanced. For the price, I expected much better quality and presentation.
What frustrated me most was the lack of response and laughing when we raised our concerns. Instead of addressing the issue professionally, the staff seemed indifferent.
Unfortunately, I won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend this place based on my experience. I hope they take customer feedback seriously and make improvements.
