Steak ’n Shake delivers a dining experience that blends delicious food, classic Americana, and nearly a century of restaurant history. Our recent visit reminded us why this brand has remained such a beloved staple across the Midwest.

Steak ’n Shake was founded in 1934 in Normal, Illinois, built on a simple but bold idea: combine premium steak cuts with the classic American hamburger. The founder, Gus Belt, famously ground steak cuts right in front of guests to prove the quality. An approach that set Steak ’n Shake apart and helped define its identity. Over the decades, the restaurant became known for its steakburgers, hand‑dipped milkshakes, and diner‑style service, creating a unique blend of fast service and sit‑down comfort.

Several elements continue to make this restaurant stand out today:
– Hand‑dipped milkshakes blended the old‑fashioned way.
– Crisp, flavorful fries, now cooked in beef tallow for that classic, rich taste.
– A diner‑inspired atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and relaxed.
– Made‑to‑order meals that balance speed with quality.
– A long tradition of value, offering hearty meals at reasonable prices.

Our meal was excellent from start to finish. My wife enjoyed her Chicken Tenders, which were hot, crispy, and satisfying. I ordered the Beef Tallow Fries and a Chocolate Milk Shake, and both were absolutely perfect. The fries had that classic flavor you can’t fake, and the shake was thick, creamy, and exactly what a milkshake should be.

The restaurant itself was clean, quiet, and comfortable, making it easy to relax and enjoy our meal. It’s clear the team takes pride in maintaining a pleasant dining environment.

Steak ’n Shake continues to honor its history while serving up consistently good food in a welcoming setting. This location reminded us why the brand has endured for generations: great flavors, friendly service, and a timeless dining experience.

I would go to a different steak and shake. This one rarely has fresh hot fries. Hamburgers always disappoint in some way. I don’t like to be this critical but I would suggest to drive to any other steak and shake besides this one if you want to pay for a decent meal.

I don’t usually leave reviews, but this time I have to. I ordered a burger and a milkshake, but the bun was too hard and cold, the fries were cold, the milkshake was bland or the milk had curdled, and the service was terrible. The bathrooms were also extremely dirty. Take heed of the reviews; I do not recommend coming to this place

My husband and I got food from here. It was awful. First thing is they forgot several items. When my husband went in to get the items no one helped him for twenty minutes. They would look at him and not address him. Then he said excuse me and the workers looked at him and said it will be a minute… well a minute turned into 20 minutes. There were two people working and a third just chilling in the back not helping. This led to our food being cold. I have worked in fast food, I even worked for Steak N Shake for a year. This is completely unacceptable. There is a way to handle customers and this is not it. I am really disappointed in the service.

The food was good and our server was friendly. The price was great. However the service was very slow. It’s exactly what you would expect from a steak and shake. Probably not their best or worst location but when I came in it took almost 45 minutes to get a milkshake. Seems like an inordinate amount of time. I would go there again if I had to but wonder what took so long to make my milkshake?

Whoever is taking orders at the knife shift window is very rude and is he doesn’t want to listen to the order rung me up for something I did not ask or gave me a completely different order. Maybe we pay way more.
