Was really excited but didn’t live up to the hype at all… portions were small, prices were high… food was just ok… Hostess had a bad attitude. Our server was really nice, but just very disappointed overall. Buscuits and gravy was 2 biscuits and a dinner style gravy, and it was on the breakfast menu… laughably small portion for $9, for something as inexpensive as buscuits, you should expect more… the monté cristo sandwich was pretty good but very small as well, and the poutine was the best thing we had an it was just ok as well, Just simply not worth the price… there are far better places in Chicago to get some very good vegan comfort food. Sorry for the not great review, I hate leaving negative reviews on vegan restaurants, but leaving feeling slightly ripped off is never fun as well. Hope things get better.

I chose this restaurant based on glowing reviews and a blog recommendation unfortunately, those portrayals were completely misleading. This was one of the most fabricated dining experiences I’ve ever had.

The food quality was extremely poor. I ordered a portobello mushroom sandwich that barely contained any mushrooms at all. The portion was skimpy and disappointing. The only redeeming part of the meal was the bread, which was fresh and tasty otherwise, the sandwich would have been inedible. The salad that accompanied it was visibly spoiled, with brown and black lettuce, as shown in the photos. I was shocked that such food would be served to a paying customer.

Beyond the food, the experience was made worse by the manager’s behavior, which felt discriminatory and unwelcoming. There was an unmistakable sense that I was not wanted there. The restaurant displays a sign stating “All Are Welcome,” but my experience contradicted that message entirely.

I left feeling disgusted not only by the poor food quality but by the overall treatment. This establishment does not live up to its reputation, and I would not recommend it.

This was my first time eating an entirely vegan meal, and I have to say—I was blown away! The food was absolutely amazing, full of flavor, and so satisfying. My waitress, Lia, was on point—friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience smooth. The food didn’t take long to come out either, which was a nice surprise. I left completely satisfied, and my tummy couldn’t be happier. Definitely recommend The Chicago Diner to anyone, vegan or not—you won’t be disappointed!

As a repeat diner, I can happily confirm that The Chicago Diner continues to live up to its legendary “Meat-Free Since ’83” reputation. This was my second visit, and once again I walked out wondering how plant-based comfort food can taste this fresh and satisfying.

Every dish that hit the table—from the soul-warming soups to the perfectly seasoned entrées—had bright, clean flavors that never felt heavy. You can tell the kitchen treats vegetables like the stars they are rather than a side

The team here isn’t just polite; they’re excited about the food. Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or just veg-curious, they explain the menu with contagious enthusiasm and spot-on recommendations. Service felt more like being hosted by friends than a typical restaurant interaction.

Great first visits are easy great second visits prove the place is dialed in. Both times the quality, plating, and timing were identical—an encouraging sign that The Chicago Diner cares about every plate, every day.
the Radical Reuben (yes, it’s plant-based and yes, it’s that good), the Thai Chili Wings appetizer, and absolutely save room for one of their legendary vegan shakes.

If you want bold, crave-worthy food that just happens to be meat-free, The Chicago Diner is a must-try—and, judging by my experience, a must-return. Two visits down, many more to come!

This place needs some revamping. It was our favorite place to eat in the city. We went there every 2+3 months as we raised our girls. Last week we went again to celebrate a milestone event.
Food has become a bit more expensive than expected, portion size has gone smaller. Onion rings were just a few and burnt. Nachos have lost the taste and salt was over bearing. Our drinks too sweet too small for the price.
I miss the grandeur of what this place was. I yearn for those juicy delicious sauces and curries. Thai rice had nothing Thai other than basil..
Furniture has to get a deep clean as it did get a bit sticky from the last time I remember. I know the owner would like to keep it the way it has always been, but for our family we felt it’s not growing with time. I missed their zeal to be the universe of relevant

Very crowded Friday, pretty loud, everyone at ease, servers about business & getting u ye grub ASAP! TCD, an all vegan restaurant, offered & delish vegan shakes & deserts. When sold out, that’s it! Delicious and tostadas, quinoa & ️ amazing ChimiChurri. Kinda pricey, eh. A rare treat 4 us from Ohio. Mac n = . Leak soup def needs some fresh taste, too & bland, but all else . They have Parking Which I wish I knew of before paying fees!

Great, tasty, and filling vegan food with some vegetarian options.

Food: I had the black bean burger with added avocado and sweet potato fries. Burger was huge and incredibly flavorful. Sweet potato fries were a good execution of the standard sweet potato fries.

Service: very welcoming, friendly, timely, and accommodating. great service overall.

Atmosphere: honestly was so hungry that I didn’t pay too much attention but it’s like a classic American diner.

Will absolutely return and recommend it to anyone visiting and looking for great vegan food.

This place is really cute. Lovely decor and vibe, plus in a cool area. However, we were disappointed by the food, overall. We ordered the poutine chips, steak (entree) and wings. Both the steak and wings were made out of seitan, which wasn’t great. The steak was breaded, whilst the wings weren’t, which was a bit odd. I think this place is missing a trick not using a different vegan protein for either of these. It was seitan overkill. Soy protein like Impossible or others is far better for these kind of meals. There was also a lot of fake meat in the steak dish, but hardly any mash, which was a shame. The veggies were delicious though. And the chips were very tasty – I enjoyed that the sauce wasn’t too rich (which is often the case in places in the UK). I guess expectations were perhaps too high. We are blessed with many vegan options in Bristol, UK. Would still recommend this place, but maybe don’t order exactly what we did, and feel like this place could be so much better.

Honestly one of the best experiences. We loved the energy and the atmosphere as soon as we walked up to the door. The staff was friendly from the start. We had a chance to chat with the manager Jaxy! What a lovely human! So kind. Our waiter was also amazing and so genuinely friendly. Helping us with suggestions in the area. And making sure we were well taken care of. We are visiting from Ohio and this was an awesome stop on our Chicago experience. Thank you all for the memory! Jeff, Heather and Thera from small town Ohio.

Hip vegan diner serving up plant based classics!

Love the concept of this place! Vegans often only find abundant options when it comes to salad places, wellness eateries, or Mediterranean restaurants. To have classic diner meals like burgers and meatloaf along with other comfort food is a treat!

The staff was beyond friendly, the atmosphere was welcoming and warm. It truly does feel like an inclusive environment where all can be themselves and be comfortable.

With that said, even though I enjoyed my meal, which was the meatloaf, I did find it on the salty side. If you’re sodium sensitive this may not be for you. The beans and potatoes were on the greasy side. My partner had similar feedback about his meal.

I’d go back to give this place a second try and would recommend it to anyone in the area looking for a hearty plant based experience!
