Stopped by Heid’s for dinner and tried a couple of their famous dogs. I went with a plain Hofmann Frank dressed with just mustard and a Texas Hot style. The Hofmann dog was everything a classic frank should be—juicy, flavorful, and perfectly grilled. The Texas Hot was the star, topped with an awesome homemade meat sauce that had a little kick up front, balanced nicely by a slightly spicy mustard. Both toppings worked great on either dog.

The fries were spot-on—crispy, golden, and served in a generous portion. The location is a big plus, sitting conveniently near the lake, making it an easy stop before or after enjoying the water. The weekday dinner crowd kept the atmosphere laid back and relaxed, perfect for a casual bite.

If you’re in the area, Heid’s is a must for great dogs, great fries, and a bit of local flavor.

I had to try Heid’s original location I was disappointed. I have heard so much about this Syracuse tradition. Especially the fries, well mine were double cooked and tasted like the grease and small. I complained and they said that’s the way they come? Look at the picture you be the judge! I did like the sausage but not the 10 dollars price. The hot dogs were very small for the price 6 dollars for a chili dog “ Really”The beer was excellent.. not sure I would go back unless they run price specials!

Heids is a great place. Friendly staff, good location and good atmosphere. Prices are reasonable except for fried pickles. They know they are gouging us for our love of pickles.

Heid’s is a cherished Syracuse & Central New York landmark which has withstood the test of time since their opening in 1917 and moving to their current location in 1930. What an honor and treat it is to step back in time and enjoy an almost century old establishment. The food here is simple Upstate NY comfort food but perfectly done. Hotdogs, coneys, Texas hots, chili dogs, fries, pickles, grilled cheeses, chicken tenders, and mozzarella sticks are served here. It should be noted that while one can buy Hoffmans in the store, Heid’s continues to serve their own secret blend of Hoffman’s hotdogs and coneys from when they were originally founded. I continue to go here and support this wonderfully local multigenerational business just as my grandparents and great grandparents have done. It fills my heart to continue to spend time here knowing of all the people who have supported this establishment throughout its inception.

I give it 1 star shy of 5 due to the price. 5 cents shy of $5. for a hotdog! ‍♂️ That’s crazy. But they are good. I’m a truck driver out of Virginia, and I first tried this place back in July of last year (2023) after some random people I was talking to at a local diner recommended trying this place. I think I was told this was the oldest eatery in town or something like that. So this is my 2nd time eating here. I got the Snappy dog and Frank dog. The snappy has a slightly distinct taste compared to the traditional frank dog. Both dogs (w/ chili & onion) are pretty good. I just think they’re overpriced compared to what I’m used to back home. Not a fan of the fries, but I do like the baked beans. I’ll try the onion rings next time I’m passing thru.
Sadly, they don’t have 18-wheeler parking, but if you’re bobtail, they can accommodate.

Ample parking here . We waited in line maybe ten minutes. They had a line that was to the door in the hotdog place. The line moved fairly quickly. We ordered and by the time we reached the register they had my order almost ready. I wanted too go here because I saw pics of the meat sauce. I love a good meat sauce. Not chilli dogs I dislike chilli dogs. So I ordered three Texas hots(meat sauce , onion, mustard,)and a large order of bacon cheese fries. The dogs didn’t disappoint. They were slightly spicy and were pretty good. I haven’t found anywhere else that offers the traditional meat sauce. I did think that the large order of bacon cheese fries was a bit on the small size. It was around $33 total .For two medium drinks, three Texas hots and a large order of bacon cheese fries. It’s worth stopping in and checking them out if your a fan of meat sauce. Apparently this place gets one heck of a line. So glad we didn’t have too wait in line forever.

I am part of the 3rd generation of my family, out of four, that have eaten at Heid’s. They are a Syracuse area institution, combined with Hofmann hotdogs. This is a must stop destination anytime I am back in the area. The many additions to the menu are nice, but I typically stick to the traditional snappy grillers, coneys with brown mustard, and a chocolate milk. My only criticism is that they no longer serving Byrne Dairy’s chocolate milk. Bring back Byrne Dairy!

The hot dogs here are far from good. I have had better hot dogs from an Oscar Myers pack. The price of $6 for one dog is outrageous. The place is cute, but the reason I didn’t go lower is because the food wasn’t actively bad.
Update: 11-4
Heid’s asked for more information.
The taste of the dog is subpar. The texture is very tough because the case that is used on these dogs is way to thick. This creates a texture in the dog while chewing that is less than optimal. The chili is ok nothing much to comment on. But the price is outrageously expensive.
