We were traveling from Charlotte to Norfolk and stopped here for lunch. Everything was fantastic from the fried pickles, hush puppies to the pulled pork and corn pudding. Since it was our first time here they gave us samples of the baked beans, butter beans and Brunswick stew. I highly recommend driving a mile off the interstate to get some real food.

Great restaurant! My kinda of restaurant! Great service , great food , great prices! Hush puppies are the greatest! Will be back even though I live an hour away! Tea is great also.

If you prefer one-offs to chains and fast-food, this is a perfect place to get off the interstate and grab a quick bite. Even though they are west of 95, Skipper serves Eastern Carolina BBQ. The slaw is minced cabbage, not too sweet, and they don’t serve collards. You’ll be greeted coming in with a friendly, “Seat yourself!” and if you’re lucky, Dorothy will be taking care of you.

We stopped here on our way to Virginia. It was a great find. They served the table an order of tasty hush puppies before the food. The pork chops were super tender and the corn pudding and Mac and cheese were awesome. Everything came out super quick and the staff were great.

Today I went to pick up my father’s order. Waited at the window for 15 minutes before one of the employees came to the window and asked for a name. He was polite but I waited another 10 minutes thinking maybe they hadn’t completed his order. I decided to go in and ask for his order waited another 10 minutes before the same gentleman asked had I been waited on, I replied no. Five minutes later another employee asked what order I was waiting on when I told her she went and pulled it off the shelf cold where it had been sitting the whole time I was waiting drive thru. My advice, if your business is so short staffed close the drive thru and let your customers know they will have to come in to get their order. FYI, customer service was polite but the kitchen needs some help….. BADLY!

This is a little diamond in the rough place with great people and good food. Recommend the chicken and dumplings which are chunky dumplings in a creamy sauce with lots of chicken. Can’t wait to try the fish! BBQ was good.

If the waitstaff won’t tell you to seat yourself, there should be a sign at the entrance! Pay at the counter after as well. Service was incredibly slow. By the time my food got to the table, it was barely lukewarm. What really got me was the ever-so-slight hint of mold in my ice water! BBQ was okay. Coleslaw was good, albeit with a slightly different taste (maybe allspice?) Best part of the meal was the free hushpuppies. They came out fast, piping hot! I really wanted to like this spot, but alas.

Delicious. Everything Eastern NC BBQ should be – vinegary, hint-of-heat, deliciously chewy meat. Get the BBQ sandwich and hushpuppies galore. The Brunswick stew was a classic too.
A quick (< 3min total) detour off I85 — well worth it! We ordered ahead online.

The online menu on their website has incorrect much lower prices. Although the BBQ was good, I would have liked to know that the price was $5 more than what is listed on their own website. I informed the lady at the drive thru that the price online stated something different and showed her. She didn’t care. Either honor your posted prices. Or add a *price fluctuates* clause.
