We went to The Holy Donut while we were in Portland and tried a potato donut for the first time in my life. I ordered the cinnamon sugar and it was so good. It had this perfect texture, slightly crisp on the outside and really soft inside, and it wasn’t overly sweet. I honestly did not expect to love a potato donut that much.

We got there around noon and most of the donuts were already sold out, which tells you how popular it is. They were still making fresh ones though, and the whole place smelled amazing. I brought one home for my daughter and she ate it the next morning and loved it. She kept saying how good it was.

The shop itself is really cute and has a fun, welcoming vibe. The staff was super nice and friendly even though it was busy. I would absolutely recommend stopping here if you are in Portland. It was such a fun little find for us.

The Holy Donut is such a fun and memorable stop in Portland! Their donuts are made with potatoes, which gives them an incredible texture—soft, moist, and perfectly satisfying without being overly sweet. The variety is especially impressive and creative. We tried flavors like sweet potato coffee cake, ginger glazed, dark chocolate sea salt, and pomegranate, and each one was genuinely delicious and unique.

The shop is conveniently located downtown and very easy to walk to if you’re exploring the area. We went on a Monday morning, so there was no line at all, but there are clear signs posted for how to queue when lines are out the door—which tells me this place is usually very popular (for good reason).

If you’re in Portland, this is absolutely worth a stop. Creative flavors, great quality, and a really enjoyable experience overall.

Stopped by The Holy Donut to try their famous potato donuts. I had the toasted coconut, and it was okay — soft and fresh but not as flavorful as I expected. The texture is unique and dense compared to regular donuts. The shop can get busy, especially in the mornings, but the line moves quickly. There’s limited seating, so it’s best for a grab-and-go treat.

The flavor was great but I had a little issue with them being a touch too oily for me. It could be a personal thing but both the old fashioned and the bacon cheddar bites were flavorful but oily. The customer service was really top notch. Helpful and we actually had a minor issue with our order and they immediately addressed it with a smile. It’s a rather small place with limited seating but we were there early before the crowds and it was lovely. I think potato makes it a heavier donut and it’s great for dunking in coffee. The was yummy and tasted of really good quality in my opinion.

I should preface I’m not a donut lover unless it’s a cake donut. My friend really wanted to try this place so luckily there was no line and we strolled in.

We decided on the gooey bacon and cheese, tater tots and 4 donuts maple, blueberry lemon, sweet potato and something else I can’t remember. The gooey bacon and cheese and tots were the show stoppers, we were not a fan of the donuts. They had a very dense consistency, with no flavor outside of whatever frosting or topping was on the donut. We did not finish them and would only return for non donut items ‍♀️

Popular place that others seem to really love but the donuts were not donuting.

We waited in line for about 15 minutes on a Saturday morning. They have a good variety of flavors, which was definitely appealing. We got a maple donut and an apple cider glazed donut. My takeaway is that I’m not really a fan of potato donuts unfortunately. The apple cider glazed was the best one we tried, but the flavor still felt pretty mild / average.

The maple donut was dense and didn’t have much flavor — even the frosting only had a subtle hint of maple. I didn’t end up finishing it, which is rare for me when it comes to donuts. I also tried the dark chocolate sea salt, and that one was probably the best of the bunch.

If you’re curious to try a potato donut, it’s worth stopping by. But if you’re just looking for a really good, flavorful donut, this might not be the place. The service was fast and friendly, and there’s indoor seating if you want to eat inside.

This Friday morning the shop was quiet, only one customer ahead of us. Hot decaf coffee that was not bitter but it did cool quickly before it was finished. Also iced coffee (decaf not available) was ok. The donuts are made with potato so expect a heavier consistency. Blueberry with lemon glaze. The glaze kept chipping off the donut while I tried to eat it so I had a pile of lemon glaze to eat after the donut consumed. The pumpkin glaze much better. The flavor like pumpkin pie and the glaze was smooth and creamy which stuck to the donut. Seating is very limited even this morning. Good to plan on take out

First time in Portland and I heard great things about The Holy Donut. They are not a typical donut shop. They make potato donuts! This creates a distinctively light, fluffy, and moist texture. I never had one before so I was excited to try. I asked staff what the popular flavors are and their seasonal flavors. They listed a few seasonal flavors and I ended up ordering their seasonal Pumpkin donut. WHEW!! It was so good and I have now been converted. I now prefer potato donuts over regular donuts. They have seating too so if you’re impatient like me you can eat your donut(s) there!

Located in walking distance from the Portland cruise terminal, I heard from many places/people that I had to try a Maine potato donut and The Holy Donut was top on the list. We arrived around 2:30 to a long line waiting outside the building. We waited about 20 minutes in line to get inside and to the register. We got the Lone Pine Pumpkin and Chocolate Sea Salt. Honestly I’m not sure what the hype was all about. They were dense but also like cake donuts (it has potato but still has flour) and a bit dry. The chocolate sea salt (we were told it was one of their top sellers) was better than the pumpkin but not by much. Was it worth the 30 -40 minute experience, not in my opinion.

Grabbed these at the gluten free expo over the weekend. My only regret is not getting more! Phenomenal gluten free potato donuts! My favorite is the chocolate. Great donuts and the size is great too. All of the flavors are great, not a single complaint. I can’t wait to be able to get more!
