Plaza Khao Gaeng: 9/10 – My Southern Thai Fix in London

Plaza Khao Gaeng tops my London Thai list after five-plus visits last year—ideal for solo diners like me grabbing dinner post-work or uni. Their Deep South Menu (£42, sharing plates from Thailand’s far south) is a steal: loads of small, punchy dishes that fill you up nicely even alone (around £50 with a drink).

Stir-fried morning glory with chilli and fermented soy beans? Crisp, fiery, umami bliss—total standout. Gai Tord Hat Yai crispy chicken delivers that southern crunch outside, juicy bite inside. Shrimp paste relish with fresh veg and herbs hits authentic notes, and gaeng som sour orange curry (sea bass, papaya, cauliflower, cha-om omelette) brings zesty magic. New season jasmine rice soaks it all up perfectly.

Beef shoulder massaman with potatoes and shallots: tender beef magic, but sauce too rich for me.

Staff are warm, polite—always helping, chatting, asking feedback. Makes you feel valued, like a regular.

Young coconut pudding with tapioca and lychee? Light, tropical refresh—cleansed my palate beautifully.

Been here many times and you really can’t fault it, delicious and authentic Thai food, friendly staff. Favourite dishes would be the beef shoulder curry, fried chicken starter with chilli sauce, green chicken curry, prawn curry. Fair warning that the dry wok fried pork is SO spicy that we couldn’t finish it and that’s me saying it as someone who’s from Southeast Asia. Would come again and again and recommend it to anyone.

Always incredible – never a bad meal!! The buzz and business of the restaurant is just like being in Thailand, as is the food.

They serve dishes you may not have heard of or tried before from south Thailand – including stir fries and curries.

The maeng da lagerita is my fav drink, but don’t skip the teas if you’re looking for a soft & they help with the heat. There is a lot of spice but the staff can help you decide.

Great lunch menu & pre-theatre too for a quick bite. Also amazing for groups so you can get eveything & share.

Wonderful food, lovely welcoming staff & a brilliant bustling restaurant.

Authentic little Thai restaurant next to Tottenham Court Road station. Their food was delicious and not the usual dishes one could find in the mainstream Thai restaurants. We had the pork belly and butter melon with egg as main. The fried chicken as snack. Service was very efficient and the staffs were friendly. Highly recommend this place.

Such a fun place to have dinner, truly brings you to Thailand! Loved the fried chicken, ordered the prawns curry, loved the fact they didn’t make it less spicy! Super friendly service, enjoyed this meal a lot

One of my new favourite restaurants! There was a rustic, inviting atmosphere and our server was so friendly, giving helpful recommendations on what to order, and topping up our curry sauce without us asking. Service was prompt too.

The massaman curry was the best I have ever had. Their menu is very unique and the dishes can be spicy, so it is worth asking beforehand if you are sensitive to chilli.

I am already looking forward to returning 🙂

This place serves truly authentic Thai food with the perfect balance of sour, salty, spicy, and sweet — just like how it tastes back home. Every dish is full of real Thai flavors, not toned down, and absolutely satisfying.

The atmosphere is simple and charming, decorated just like a local eatery in Thailand. It really feels as if you’re sitting in a typical neighborhood restaurant back home — warm, casual, and genuinely Thai.

The service is excellent as well. The staff were polite, attentive, and very helpful, especially when recommending dishes to my foreign friend, who ended up loving the experience.

Overall, Plaza Khao Gaeng is a great spot if you’re looking for real, home-style Thai food right in the heart of London. Highly recommended!

Amazing Thai food, tastes like it came straight out of a wok in Bangkok. Unexpectedly the star was the egg and bittergoard — tons of wok hey and savoury notes. Prawn curry was thick and tangy. Fried chicken was crunchy and had the greasy flavour that comes with high heat frying. Honestly the fried pork was too spicy for me to taste anything.

Problem is it’s feels extremely overpriced. Admittedly London real estate isn’t cheap, but it feels like food you can get for £10 in Bangkok. We paid £66 for four dishes and two plates of rice.

Quick s
And attentive service. Even though the place is so busy but the service was still amazing. The food was very flavourful and very authentic as well. Tried some new dishes this time. The only thing is the space is quite small so you have the cramp into same table with others if you dont mind. There was a queue but I got my table fairly quick which is a plus.
