When we walked up the walkway ramp, the smell of freshly baked items filled the air, most notably the savory baked items.
We arrived around 10:40am on a Wednesday and were pleased there were only a handful of people waiting in line. This gave us just enough time to look at the items and make a decision.
We got an almond croissant, a pistachio croissant, an eclair, and a loaf of regular sourdough bread. I liked that there was an option for getting a loaf of pre-sliced sourdough, which I opted not to do on this visit since those loaves looked a bit more “well done” on the tops compared to the unsliced ones. The service was good and we got our items pretty quickly.
The flavor and texture of both croissants were excellent. Definitely the best ones we’ve ever had. I do think there could have been just a little more filling in both. The pistachio one didn’t really taste much like pistachio, it just had a nice nutty-ish flavor. The almond had a perfect flavor, not too sweet or in your face with almond flavoring, which was great.
The eclair had an excellent chocolate topping. The filling was good but we felt could have used a bit more a custard like flavor (but perhaps this is more authentic the way they made it! Not sure).
The sourdough bread was amazing. We toasted it and added butter, it had the perfect sour flavor we were after.
Prices are a bit steep but for the quality, we don’t mind paying more. I wish they would make it clear if they used organic flour in their bread loaves, we saw a photo in another review that showed a sign that said “organic NC milled flour” but we didn’t see any sign today about that.
I liked that the sweet items were not overly sweet. Usually, I can only take a few bites of most sweet things but I found myself almost eating half of the eclair and half of the croissant.
We will definitely be back to try more items!
Take it from someone who has lived in San Francisco (supposedly where you can find the top bakeries in the United States) and has travelled extensively to France and Italy. Their products are top notch.
If you’re looking for the overly sweet desserts common in the south, this place is not it – their offerings are more elegant and European.
It’s an absolute hidden gem in the heart of the Triad.
I tried an almond croissant, which had a very pleasant buttery flavor, but almost no filling. The prosciutto puff pastry pocket was nice as well, with fatty prosciutto inside. The limoncello pie was fairly unremarkable, tasted like an average cream pie or cheesecake topped with jam. The pecan brownie was probably the best of the bunch – very gooey and chocolatey.
The prices were surprisingly high. $7 for a cannoli (pre-filled, rather than filled on the spot for you), $10 for the prosciutto pocket. I guess even though you’re only open 2 days a week you still need to pay the rent.
I enjoyed what I had, but I likely wouldn’t come back to try others, especially if its so difficult to do so with the two days a week availability.
What an amazing variety of both sweet and savory items, in addition to their large selection of breads. It was hard to choose for our first time. We seriously wanted to try everything since it looked so good!
My wife and I shared a cream cheese filled cruffin, jalapeño and cheese quiche, and a pesto prosciutto pastry. We were in heaven. Can’t emphasize enough how fresh everything tasted. We wanted more, and ended up bringing home 2 loaves of bread, a sourdough loaf and a Parisian baguette. Later that same day we ended up eating most of the bread, adults and kids included.
Don’t miss out on this one. If you have numerous bakeries in your area and think this one is too far, believe me it’s worth the drive!
Pictured are the blueberry fold pastry, apple crumble pastry, raspberry cruffin, strawberry chocolate chip cake, and cranberry walnut baguette.
