It all started on a Friday night, I was turning over in my bed unable to sleep. I had a burning desire in my head to go find out what this tavern was. I had heard rumors of what it was and they only fueled my passion. It was said that it was haunted by ghosts of the Civil war. They said the place is possessed from the tormented spirits of the Cadets who endured the Swamp Fox cycle.
I wasn’t the one to believe such rumors, I just knew there had to be artifacts inside worth finding. That dark, foggy, and gloomy Friday night, I ventured out of the barracks to discover what awaited me inside the tavern. Little did I know the horrors that awaited me. I made it to the street beside the place, no traffic was in sight, it was dead silent outside. I didn’t pay attention to it at the time, but all the street lights were red, as if they were warning me to go back. I should’ve listened.
There was only a dingy, rusted ladder to get up to the balcony that hosted the tavern. As I made my way up it I was hit with a pounding sensation that something was wrong. I didn’t quit. I had made it this far and I couldn’t quit now. I stood there at the door to the tavern and put my hand on the knob. I swallowed my prayers and I knew there was no turning back now.
As I creaked the door open I instantly knew that I had uncovered something that was never meant to be found. The room had a putrid smell of indescribable matter. The odor forced me to tear up and even burned my eyes. From what I could make out, it only appeared to be chairs and mirrors inside the room. Many, many chairs. The chairs seemed to be arranged in a strange manner. Mirrors lined the walls completely surrounding the entire room. I slowly stepped into the room to see if there was anything else I could find. I noticed on the far side wall was a small chest. I scurried over to it as I didn’t want to be inside the tavern any longer. There was a rusted lock holding it shut, but as I studied it I had broke it off.
Now was the time for me to discover what really lied inside the tavern. I slowly opened the lid to the chest as I was scared to see what was inside. As it opened I saw just lone key. It was no ordinary key, it had the look of the old skeleton keys except on the end where normally would be an intricate metal work design, was just the Swamp Fox logo. I stuck the key in my pocket and turned my back to the chest as I was trying to hurry out the door. Instantly I stopped dead in my tracks. The room was no longer alone. My eyes were spread open more than ever before due to the horrors that unfolded in front of me. Above each chair was a bloody, rotten corpse, hung by a noose. They had appeared out of nowhere. I was frozen, my mind was having a millions thoughts a second, but I couldn’t get myself to move. I finally regained my sense and bolted to the door. I threw the key down as I ran because I didn’t want the cursed artifact with me any more. I jumped straight off the balcony onto the streets below. I smacked into the ground with a loud thud and a sharp sense of pain in my ankle. I couldn’t stop moving I had to get back to campus. I sprinted faster than I ever had in my life. I never let up even as my body was screeching in pain. I made it back to my room and laid on the bed. I blacked out just from the pure adrenaline, shock, and pain I had just endured. As I awoke in the morning I couldn’t believe what had just happened.
As I gathered my sense I reached in my pocket and found the Swamp Fox key from the tavern. I instantly felt a dark sense of dread hit me. It has been a week since the event and I have been unable to get rid of the key. No matter what I try it will always appear back in my pocket. I have had nightmares every night of the events that happened at the tavern. I have hallucinations of the hanging bodies and I hear voices telling me to return to the tavern. I feel as though to end the curse I must obey.
Tonight I will return to the tavern.
