I was seated fairly quickly and ordered my Diet Coke as per my usual, and it came in a big glass!
I ordered the two meat combo with brisket and smoked chicken wings. I also ordered the deep fried cheese curds.
I tell you, even the Texas toast had a smoky flavor to it. Everything was amazing here the food, the service, the atmosphere all five stars. Beans were off the hook as well. Bravo!!
We sat for 15 minutes before anyone even bothered to acknowledge our table of nine. After finally taking our order, it took another 15 minutes just to get drinks. There is absolutely no excuse for that. I worked in food service for years — drinks do not take 30 minutes unless no one is paying attention.
Then we waited 48 more minutes for food, and most of our meals were salads and sandwiches. Not steaks. Not complicated entrées. Salads. One woman at our table didn’t even receive her salad until five minutes after everyone else was served, which is just embarrassing.
What should have been a normal lunch turned into a two-hour lesson in poor management and disorganization.
The manager did come over — after the damage was done. Despite the fact that this impacted all nine of us, he initially discounted only my check. Only after it was pointed out did he discount the other delayed meal. Even then, he lacked the professionalism to return to the table and address the group directly. That speaks volumes.
Slow kitchens happen. Being overwhelmed happens. Ignoring customers and handling it poorly afterward is a choice.
This was not a busy-night hiccup. This was a complete failure in basic restaurant service. Do better.
This Sonny’s BBQ is located on State Road 50 in Central Florida, just east of downtown Orlando and Christmas, Florida. This restaurant is part of the well-known Sonny’s chain that started in Gainesville in 1968. This location delivers on the brand’s reputation for solid barbecue and warm service. The building is easy to spot and has plenty of parking around the sides and back, though the main road, SR 50, can get a little busy during peak hours. Inside, the atmosphere is classic Sonny’s—laid-back, clean, and family-friendly. We were greeted promptly by a smiling hostess and seated in a booth, which seems to be the default at most Sonny’s locations. The service was quick and attentive from start to finish. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich and french fries with a tea for the drink. All of the food came out hot and fresh within minutes. The meat was tender and flavorful, especially when topped with Sonny’s signature sweet sauce. For a full meal and drinks, the price came out under $35 for two people, which is a good price for a sit-down barbecue restaurant. All in all, this Sonny’s on SR 50 lives up to the high standards of the chain—reliable, tasty, and budget-friendly. A great stop for a good meal.
