We visited this restaurant two weeks ago while in Downtown Orlando during an emotionally significant time for our family. My niece was in labor with her first child, and while waiting at the hospital, we decided to step out for dinner nearby. Based on the many positive reviews, we chose this place expecting a welcoming experience.

Upon arrival, we were immediately asked if we had a reservation. When we said we did not, the hostess dismissed us and stated the restaurant was “booked solid for the night,” despite the dining room being clearly half empty. When my son-in-law questioned this, she insisted there was nothing available and told us the wait would be about an hour and a half. Since we had taken an Uber from the hospital, we reluctantly agreed to wait.

A few minutes later, while still standing there, I checked online and was shocked to see that both Google and OpenTable showed plenty of available reservations for the same time. I made a reservation under my name. Shortly after, I overheard another hostess inform the original hostess that a reservation under my name had “opened up,” without acknowledging that I had just made it. Only then did the original hostess come over and say a space had opened.

I explained how upsetting it was to be treated that way when reservations were clearly available. There was no apology, no explanation—just silence. We were seated at one of the many empty tables, feeling dismissed and uncomfortable.

To be clear, our waiter was excellent, and the food was good. Later, the hostess brought a courtesy item to the table, but again, without any verbal acknowledgment or apology. The owner/manager also stopped by, was very kind, and even offered a Japanese after-dinner shot to celebrate the birth of my niece, sharing that he had recently become a grandparent himself. That gesture was appreciated.

However, after a $450+ bill, while the food and waiter met expectations, the feeling of how we were initially treated never went away. I waited two weeks to write this review to be sure I still felt the same—and unfortunately, I do.

A hostess who shows such poor ethics, lack of accountability, and disregard for guests should not be in a service environment. At worst, the behavior felt discriminatory; at best, deeply unprofessional. It is especially disappointing because this restaurant has great food and otherwise good staff, yet one person managed to make the entire experience upsetting and unpleasant.

For that reason, I am leaving a 1-star review. Service matters just as much as food, and no guest should be made to feel dismissed or unwelcome the way we were.

Great place if you crave sushi, but not the best.
