It’s been about 15 years since we were here the last time. We were a little worried they would have scrapped their unique environment of little individual booths and sitting areas for a more generic, modern dining room. They haven’t, and it’s still delightful.
We split an El Presidente burrito. It was very tasty and just enough for the two of us. It was busy on a Friday night, but service was on point.

We arrived shortly after normal lunch hours. We were greeted and seated immediately. Our server promptly came over with chips and salsa and took our drink orders.
They have free bean dip but it’s not announced and you have to go get it yourself. There are neon signs on the wall above it, so it’s not like it’s hidden. Just kind of odd that no one said anything about it. The bean dip was VERY good (not spicy at all) and I’m not the hugest fan of refried beans; I ate an embarrassing amount.
We both ordered seafood enchiladas and WOW!!!! They did not disappoint. They were absolutely phenomenal. They were so good, I no longer have any interest in trying anything else on the menu; this is my new go to.
The salsa was very good. It might be a tiny bit too spicy for some people, but I liked it. I did not care for the rice, but I truly think that’s just a personal preference. There was a spice in it that I didn’t care for.
The decor is…. Interesting. It’s like medieval Mexican prison meets vintage cattle ranch.
The restaurant (including ladies room) was very clean. Everything was handicap accessible. The temperature was perfect.
I did not look for a kids menu, but I would be comfortable bringing children to this restaurant. There were several vegetarian options.
Parking was plentiful.
They have the fanciest take out boxes ever. Lol

We may have ordered the wrong thing. Had the cantina beef wet burrito. It was loaded with sour cream and hardly any meat. My tummy was telling me about it later. Server was very nice however. The cowhide seats were interesting.

Once upon a time, this was my favorite Mexican restaurant in all of GR. It even topped Trini’s in Sparta. So when my grandparents told me to pick a restaurant for my birthday dinner, I chose Cantina.
That was a mistake.
I am hard of hearing. Knowing this, my grandma attempted – twice this previous week – to call and make a reservation to ensure we would be sat towards the back, away from the crowd, so I could hear. No one answered the phone.
When my grandparents arrived (before us) they requested a booth towards the back. Instead, they were seated at the very front of the restaurant, against the wall – next to the entry way, in the center, with the hostess station on the other side of the wall.
When we arrived, I told the hostess my grandparents were already there. She still attempted to seat us.
I ordered a taco dinner, soft shell, beef tacos. My order was correct. My grandmother ordered fish tacos. They brought us two orders of soft shell beef tacos. They apologized and offered to remake her food, which she declined as she had already waited for her food to be made – incorrectly.
I ordered a margarita. The margaritas used to be fantastic, but today, I could tell this was bottom shelf tequila. Why? Because the aftertaste, and the smell, was reminiscent of nail polish remover.
The food overall was fine. It is not the Cantina I remember and recommend to everyone who asks for a recommendation. The bean dip was very bland, and there was no spice in our tacos.
Our bill was not discounted for their mistake. And, while I understand the restaurant was loud, I also know that I clearly heard, without having to read her lips, my grandma state she wanted fish tacos.
This was a very disappointing experience. We came in at 2:30, so not a terribly busy time. I think the most disappointing part was not being able to talk to, or hear, my grandparents the entire time we were here.
We were better off picking up Taco Bell and eating in my apartment. At least they know how to use *some* spices, and at least I would’ve been able to hear and participate in their conversation.

Grand Rapids Gourmand
One of my favorites. If you want to do it right, come for lunch and sit at the bar. You’ll have lawyers heads down over a folder to your left and a couple carpenters laughing on your right. Truly a community hub where folks of all ages and affiliations greet one another by name. Handshakes and hugs abound. Excellent food, generous portions and pours, and prices that will make it feel like Christmas morning when you get the bill. A 2nd generation family owned joint, offering that effortless ambiance that no restaurant group has been able to summon in a lab yet. If a visit to Catina and a forkful of wet burrito doesn’t leave you invigorated, then you likely need to look into some therapy my friend. This is near the pinnacle of all the special, sometimes intangible things a restaurant can do for a soul, and for a community. Label yourself up a bowl of beans and be merry.

Great host, great food, marginal server. Seafood Chimichanga was wonderful – appreciated the sauce on the side to avoid making it soggy. Traditional margarita was good as well. Server was borderline rude, but perhaps just not good with English?

I have to say – it had been a few years since my last visit and now I remember why. I can only speak to the takeout/drive thru food – it was ok at best. Unfortunately! The taco salad took me back to high school and not in a good way for school provided lunches. With so many good Mexican restaurants in Grand Rapids I was wanting this to be another one, but was disappointed. Many good reviews and maybe food in the restaurant is better than the take out, but it will be my last trip for take out here. No one was more disappointed than I was.

This is a great place for lunch, dinner or happy hour. Prices are very reasonable and service is spectacular. Stopped in for lunch today with a group of 6 and were seated immediately even though it was very busy. It is a lot bigger than it looks from outside which helps. This place has complimentary bean dip as well as the chips and salsa! Our server was friendly and accommodating and checked back on us numerous times to make sure we were good even though he was super busy.. The menu has everything you would expect from a good Mexican restaurant can a restaurant including homemade tamales which were fantastic.
A recommend stop for those that want good Mexican and great service.
