I was planning to try this SF staple for a while and was not disappointed. Beautiful lively restaurant, amazing food and great service. It wasn’t easy to book a table for my birthday dinner (even though it was Monday evening and I was booking in 4 weeks before). The spot we got was in an alcove which was perfect for us with a very active toddler. We ordered the baked feta as an appetizer, the Moussaka and chicken souvlas , which we shared and really enjoyed. The entrees was very generous and we unfortunately didn’t have a room for the dessert (I was actually really interested in trying their baklava).
Definitely a great place for a date or celebration.

A must try if you’re in SF. Perfect for a romantic date night or to catch up with friends. For starters we ordered the octopus appetizer and dip trio. For mains we got the whole fish and rack of lamb. Dessert we had the baklava and Greek coffee. Everything was amazing and can’t wait for my next time back.

Great interior design, many details that keep you engaged with the space as you enjoy the food. Food was exceptional. Reasonably priced for the quality they offer. Huge tables that can accommodate big groups.

We had a reservation on Sunday. It was nice that they had the exact table ready for us – they were just opening back up at 5pm. The waitress was attentive, as were all the other servers – this is very important to me when we’re spending good money at a restaurant. They do have a policy in small print at the bottom of their wine menu that they require a 6% surcharge on all bills “in support of SF Employer Ordinances such as Healthy SF”, so I knew that would cost extra. We spent $400 for 2 of us, with taxes and tip.
We had 3 appetizers:
Saghanaki – fried cheese. It was nice and light but flavorful.
Kalamari (calamari) – not fried – cooked perfectly, cut like a soft steak. I love when octopus is cooked this way.
Lamb tongue – a special not on the menu. It was good, I like anything weird or different. Not super-exciting, but good.
We had 2 entrees:
Katsikaki Yiouvetsi – mild flavor, but still very good.
Rotisserie duck – not on the menu. Very flavorful and cooked very well.
We had 3 glasses of red wine ($19-20 each) that were very good. And 2 Moscow mules, also good.
My dessert was the best thing I had. I couldn’t stop saying “wow” as I was eating it. I didn’t want my partner to have any! Lol. It was ice cream with these stuffed pastries – amazing! And his was really good too – ice cream with great stuff inside. I’m sorry, I forgot to make note of the names. You can see the pics below.
Thanks for a beautiful meal – we will be back!

Kokkari Estiatorio has been a favorite of mine for over 20 years, and they never disappoint—whether it’s lunch, dinner, or a private event. This visit was for a private holiday luncheon, and everything was wonderful from start to finish. My go-to lunch favorites are the branzino and the lamb, both consistently excellent. Kokkari continues to deliver an exceptional experience every time. This place is in my top three SF restaurant recommendations.

Kokkari Estiatorio – A Taste of Greece in San Francisco

I had a wonderful lunch at Kokkari Estiatorio, and it easily lived up to its stellar reputation. The ambiance strikes that perfect balance between elegant and inviting — rustic Mediterranean charm with a touch of modern sophistication.

The Greek salad was an absolute standout — fresh, vibrant, and beautifully balanced. Every bite tasted like it had just come from a garden, with crisp cucumbers, juicy tomatoes, and creamy feta that tied it all together.

For the main course, I ordered the lamb, and it was exceptional. Tender, perfectly seasoned, and full of rich, savory flavor — truly one of the best lamb dishes I’ve had in the city.

To finish, the Greek yogurt with honey made for a perfect dessert — light, creamy, and just sweet enough. It’s a generous portion, so I’d recommend sharing it (if you’re willing to part with a few bites!).

Overall, Kokkari Estiatorio delivers a meal that feels both comforting and refined — a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Greek cuisine with a California touch. Highly recommended!

GET THE PITA it’s thick and chewy and buttery!

Cozy upscale dining. We sat at the bar. Bar seat is better than table seat. Better lighting and you can sit closer together.

Waiter said bar seats you can get by calling to reserve two days in advance. Table seats you can get by calling two weeks in advance. Unless you’re a party of one – we had a person walk in and sit next to us

Fried cheese – waiter drizzled lemon juice and it sizzled nicely. But it cooled too quickly and became boring to eat

Babaganoush – good but not the best in the city. I liked the pickled veggies that came with it though

Tzin spritz – ok, too much volume. I liked eating the berries. Waiter called them British boba

Hibiscus mocktail – tart and delicious!

Squash – forgettable, did not taste the pistachio butter

Octopus – ok, did not come with tail

Chicken – yummy and enough to feed two people

We over ordered and could not finish the chicken. The waiter packed the chicken for us

Food not worth the $200 total, you are paying for the ambience. Nice place to dress up for. Would be nice to just get drinks here also. There’s a fireplace with real fire and the overall volume is not too loud, you don’t have to strain to hear.

Kokkari has been my go to restaurant for special celebrations due to its delicious food and wonderful atmosphere. But what really stands out is the service you receive when dining here. Michele is the most hospitable, warm and kind manager. He always makes me and my group feel right at home and special. Every time we dine here, we leave talking about how wonderful of an experience it was. Thank you Michele for treating us like family and making such a lasting impression on every single friend I have ever dined with at Kokkari!

I saw other reviews recommending the appetizer lamb chops over the entrée version, and I did enjoy the appetizer one, they’re delicious, with a wonderfully crispy surface. The octopus dish is very tender, and both the whole fish and the zucchini cake are perfectly crisp on the outside. Overall, great textures and flavors!

I last remembered eating at Kokkari before the pandemic. This time around was for a work dinner, and it felt like nothing had changed. The interior and the food make up the same consistent experience.
They sat us at the table in front of the fireplace, which gave it a cozy feel. The lounge chairs, though comfy, are a tight fit and make it a little hard to get in and out though.

$12.75 Melitzanosalata, Taramosalata, Tzatziki, Favosalata, Skordalia, Tirokafteri:
good! a mixed plate of fresh dips with pita is always a good idea

$14.75 Kolokithokeftethes – crispy zucchini cakes with cucumber & mint-yogurt dressing:
good! crispy with the sweet zucchini flavor

$19.25 Saganaki – pan fried Kefalotyri cheese with lemon & oregano:
good! what’s not to like about fried cheese?

$20.75 Roasted Prawns – chili-garlic roasted wild gulf prawns:
great! very flavorful large prawns

$20.75 Octapodaki tou Yiorgou – grilled octopus with lemon, oregano, olive oil:
good! octopus is always delicious, but a tad too salty, could be a little more tender

$35 Moussaka – traditional baked casserole of spiced lamb & beef, eggplant, potato & yogurt bechamel:
okay! a creamy layered baked potato dish

$45.50 Ippoglossa – Pacific halibut filet pan roasted with fava puree, garlic & chili broccoli rabe & olive tapenade:
okay! could be a little more tender

$69 Arnisia Paidakia – grilled lamb chops with lemon-oregano vinaigrette & Kokkari potatoes:
great! beautiful lamb chops, though the best part is the vinaigrette

$13.50 Galaktoboureko – semolina custard in filo with pistachio ice cream
good! delicious balance of crunchy filo and creamy insides

$13.75 Kataifi Ekmek – shredded filo with semolina custard, creme fraiche & pistachio
good! beautiful layered cake on a crunchy kataifi crust

$11.50 Loukoumades – traditional Greek doughnuts with honey, cinnamon & walnuts:
okay! can’t complain about sugary doughnuts

It was great to try a lot of the menu in a large group, but I think if I were to come back, I might only really be interested in the lamb chops and maybe an appetizer. Too bad it’s one of the most expensive things on the menu.
