I wasn’t going to do this because I love some gates. BUT What happened to the old staff?? What happened to the greeters?? No more “MAY I HELP YOU?!” It felt awkward walking in like I didn’t belong there. She kept asking what I ordered. The floors are greasy!!! The food was horrible. The sandwich had little meat all shredded like it came from the bottom of the barrel. The fries was gross as if the oil was old. $45 on 2 beef on buns and beans that didn’t even taste right, you would think you would get what you paid for. But NO. I rather go out of my way to the hood than go back to this location again.

We had an amazing experience for my husbands birthday.. first time back to this location since they re built and it didn’t disappoint. “Aunty Sally” sure made our experience memorable. She took care of us and her service was top notch. Food was also really good. We will definitely be back!

Hands down the saddest experience I’ve ever had at a BBQ place. As a Memphian I was excited to try some legendary Kansas City stuff but Gates was a massive disappointment. What BBQ place doesn’t sell meat by the pound??? And I suppose the customer is too stupid to fill their own sauce cups. You’d of thought we robbed the server. And don’t bother asking for a refill, they don’t have them. They struggle to even fill up your cup the first time. Don’t bother going. It’s a waste of money. Sad…

Everybody knows Gates is not cheap. I got a turkey on bun and when I got home, this is what it looked like. It’s literally 2 pieces of meat on a bun for $12. This is really sad and this is why it’s hard to support black businesses. Smh

I’m sorry Mr. Gates but the service is trash. My slab of ribs were overcooked. Whoever the dude was that worked in the bag has an attitude problem. Your front worker packing people food with no gloves on. This is definitely not the Gates we grew up on

First time here, should have gotten a sample platter but not hungry enough. The burnt end mac n cheese was good but not “burnt ends” (more of left over chop). The sauces are good, fries were nice and rich, crispy on the outside and soft on the center. Service was excellent but LOUD. they yell at you when you walk in for your order. Not a bad bbq.

I cannot believe this place has anything but five stars! The employees are respectful to each other and to the customers! Food is phenomenal! Kansas City fave for sure!

Gates use to be one of my favorites. I’ve heard people complain about how their portions have gotten skimpy. I had a turkey nooner that had two slithers of turkey and a teaspoon of burnt ends on. I called to complain and the manager I spoke with immediately knew what I was calling for. I said “how do you know”? and she said because people had complained about the portions. Ms. Hudson told me she would make it right. She got off at 6pm and I told her I didn’t get off until 7:15. She said she would leave my name with the night manager. I asked if I needed to bring it back and the receipt and she said no. I get there the night manager finds my name and was about to have them remake my sandwich and here comes some guy I guess her manager saying they need the food and the receipt. I began to get irritated because the manager who I spoke with earlier said I didn’t need either. The receipt was in my daughters car. She bought my lunch and I was coming straight from work. We go back and forth and here comes another guy from the back. He proceeds to tell me about the policy and I told him that I spoke to the day manager. I told him that I can show him the post I made on Facebook. He looks at the pictures and says that how much meat you’re supposed to get on a nooner because it’s a lunch special. We go back and forth and he finally agreed to give me my food. The guy in the back fixing my food must’ve put too much meat on the sandwich he went back there to show him how to make the sandwich. Never again. I know I’m one person but with there portion sizes they’re going to keep losing customers and getting complaints.

This is definitely not the Gates it used to be. Sure, the famous sauce, fries and smoky flavor are still there, but, literally, at what cost? Talk about sticker shock: Most entrees are a la carte, and you could easily spend $25-30 on a main dish and a couple of sides. My small order of beans was a whopping $6.45 (about half a cup’s worth). One pricing exception was the BBQ hamburger and fries, which cost $7.50. My beef on bun, while large and fairly flavorful, was quite fatty, even though I ordered it “lean-as.” My beans were almost sickeningly sweet, with seemingly more syrupy goo than beans, and my wife found her hamburger completely unremarkable. Not to be outdone, the lackluster service was somewhat disorganized and decidedly slow, with about 15 minutes spent in an uncrowded line, and we later had to flag down an attendant just to get some packets of ketchup. Plus, it’s always a major turn-off when I have to trudge through a slow-moving line to order at a counter, only to be asked both on the credit-card screen and by a printed sign at the register about tipping. One of these days, I hope these places will understand that tipping is for much more labor-intensive table service, not counter service, where you’re schlepping your own tray along the assembly line like at a school cafeteria. Honestly, I expect much better from Kansas City barbecue, and Gates used to deliver. Now, it seems things have changed.

Beef on bun is so awesome. I haven’t had anything else from there because it’s that good! Clean location. People working seem nice. Line to order can get a little long tho. Worth the wait every time.
