My family and I have been here sooo many times and have had the best experiences. However, just recently, we had come by and the service did not meet the standards of the Soto we were accustomed to. Our waitress did not bring any energy, enthusiasm, or interest to our table. Each request was met with a flat affect, generalized and basic reccomendations, and absolutely no genuine followups. And to top it off, when we had finally finished our second to last dish that we ordered, she had the audacity to ask “Are yall done NOW?” in a rude manner. No Jennifer, we actually had ordered another dish that you had forgotten about, and then just assumed that “it should be dessert for us”. She never bothered to ask us how we were doing, how our food was, and if we enjoying our experience. Nor did she offer any actual dessert. Great service, especially at a restaurant as esteemed as Soto, should be anticipated and offered, not assumed and decided. Everyone else and the food though… yall are doing great. ❤️

Excellent sashimi and sushi with a tremendous variety. Very create and offering uniqueness. Tried various sashimi and sushi which was excellent. Cocktails and service great. It is pricey and expect to spend well over 100 per person.

Soto is a sleek sushi spot with fresh, well-crafted rolls and nigiri. The flavors are balanced, the fish tastes top-notch, and the presentation is always on point.
The vibe is modern and inviting, and the staff is friendly and attentive. Perfect for a casual date night or a sushi craving that hits just right

As someone who frequent the Soto Houston location all the time, I walked into the South Lamar spot with very high expectations. I’m happy to report that this location is just as good as what I’ve grown to love in Houston. The consistency across their kitchens is impressive, and the South Lamar atmosphere brings that same sophisticated, modern energy.
The Culinary Highlights
The meal was a masterclass in fish quality and presentation. We started with the Edamame, which was the perfect simple opening before diving into the more complex plates. The Hirami Usuzukuri was delicate and beautifully sliced, and the Toro Tiradito was a standout—the richness of the tuna was perfectly balanced by the bright, citrusy notes.
For the heavier hitters, the Chu Toro Nigiri was buttery and melted in my mouth, showing off the premium grade of their cuts. We also ventured into some rarer selections like the Kinmedai (Golden Eye Snapper) and the Kinki (Thornyhead), both of which were prepared with incredible precision. Each piece felt like a deliberate work of art rather than just a dish.
Service & Experience
The staff is incredibly knowledgeable; our server was able to walk us through the nuances of the different catches with ease. It’s clear that the team has maintained a strict standard of excellence across their locations. The service felt attentive and polished without being pretentious, matching the high bar I’ve come to expect from my visits in Houston.
Final Verdict: Whether you’re a Soto regular from Houston or a newcomer in Austin, the South Lamar spot delivers a world-class experience. It is worth every penny for the quality of the ingredients and the beauty of the presentation.

Visited for the first time this past weekend to celebrate my birthday and was not disappointed. Tammy (our server) was kind and knowledgable, plus she gave great recommendations I wouldn’t have thought to order, in a genuine way. The nigir was the best quality ive had in ATX since moving here – 10/10 will be back
still dreaming of the uni pasta (dont sleep on this) and the chu-toro

The food was phenomenal. Sushi was absolutely spectacular, with impeccably fresh fish served with interesting add-ons. We also really liked the miso soup, pork ribs, wagyu potstickers and little beef rolls with something incredibly delicious inside. Lamb lollipops were less amazing but the mushroom sauce that came with them was 10/10. The space is industrial and not too welcoming, and the noise level is high. Still, the food makes up for all flaws.

I was a little disappointed with the flavors, all the nigiri’s fell a little flat to me. The nigiri’s are small and expensive, Uchi is very similar from a value perspective and has much tastier food.

Two different visits have put Soto on our top table list for Sushi. Imaginative, fresh, expressive and luscious riffs on so many cuts. The menu is extensive, the daily specials push us in different directions. And the knowledgable staff and wonderful service make it so easy to just give them the ball and enjoy the progressions. There’s also this thing they call “Happy Hour”, an ancient concept to be sure, but if you happen to be there at that time, the value proposition is even stronger. Great wine list and service with such a friendly, disarming approach. Naturally at this level, it is pricey, but not out of line, and the quality of cuisine and service is so impressive, even generous. We love Soto!
