Worth coming back too
I wish I could rate Famous Dave’s at the Airway location higher, because the food itself was excellent. Unfortunately, the complete breakdown in service from the very beginning made it a deeply frustrating experience.
Let’s start with the only reason for the second star: The food was genuinely good. The barbecue was flavorful, the ribs were perfectly tender, and the sides were spot-on. The kitchen team clearly knows their craft.
However, the service was an unmitigated disaster. It started the moment we arrived. We walked in and there was no one at the host stand. We stood there for several minutes, waiting for any employee to even acknowledge we existed. The restaurant was half-empty, with plenty of clean tables, making the lack of a host even more confusing.
Once seated, the neglect continued. It took another 20 minutes for a server to come to our table, get our drinks, and take our food order. We watched servers pass by without a glance.
Then came the final wait. After ordering, it took approximately 45 minutes for our food to arrive. By this point, the restaurant was still not full, and the long delay felt completely unjustified.
When the food finally came, it was delicious, but we were so exhausted and irritated from the cumulative delays that it was hard to enjoy. The complete lack of initial greeting set the tone for an evening defined by inattentive service.
It’s a real shame. The food here is a home run, but the front-of-house service is a total strikeout. I can’t see myself returning, which is a disappointment given the quality of the barbecue.
I called the restaurant, and they said they would bring the order right out. They also mentioned they were out of blue cheese dressing and asked what we wanted instead, so we chose Thousand Island. We continued waiting, but nothing happened. I finally got out of the car and went inside. No one was at the counter, and it took a long time for anyone to acknowledge me.
When someone finally came out, they simply added the Thousand Island dressing to the same bag that had clearly been sitting there the whole time. Once we got home, we realized the salad had already been pre-dressed with Thousand Island and was soggy.
The service was slow, communication was lacking, and the quality of the food suffered as a result. Very disappointing experience.
My aunt is very shy, but Stephen made her feel comfortable, valued, and celebrated. He coordinated the staff to sing Happy Birthday to her, and seeing her smile like that was priceless. He turned what was already a special occasion into an unforgettable memory for our family.
Stephen represents exactly what outstanding hospitality should look like. Attentive, respectful, charismatic, and fully invested in making his guests feel important. Famous Dave’s is lucky to have someone like him on their team. Because of Stephen, we will absolutely be coming back and recommending this location to others.
