I had one of the most amazing days today—the best part is that I had no idea how fantastic it would be when I woke up.
Al Hebert raved about a gas station restaurant at the Port of New Iberia, so I joined him today to check it out—and I’m happy I did!
I got to meet Stacey LeBlanc Dempsey of The Frosted Apron—I think it’s the start of a great friendship! Oh, and, my good buddy Jay Florsheim swung by. Yep, this day got better and better!
The gas station primarily serves port workers and is open only on weekdays. They offer an extensive breakfast and lunch menu—I’ll definitely need to try everything! Today, however, I focused mainly on their daily special.
We were greeted by Brandon Duncan, the mastermind behind their menu, and it was a pleasure to meet him. His passion for cooking amazing food really shows.
He served us two egg rolls—one filled with chicken and the other with shrimp. I’m convinced both contained something addictive because they were the most delicious egg rolls I’ve ever had! They were filled with a spicy cheese mixture that left me wanting more. This is a must-try when you visit!
Today’s special was a smoked chicken quarter served with the best rice dressing I’ve ever had, yam and carrot soufflé, and garlic bread—all for around $12! The chicken was smoked to perfection: tender and juicy. Who would have thought you could get soufflé at a gas station? Brandon has it—it was delicious! He even suggested pairing a bite of the dressing with the soufflé, which worked wonderfully.
Brandon offers daily plate lunch specials. Follow Port Quick Shop’s page to check out the menu. I can assure you, it’s going to be delicious! It’s not far if you live in New Iberia or Delcambre. If you’re in Lafayette or Abbeville it’s worth the short drive!
After lunch, Brandon surprised us by offering an exclusive tour of Avery Island. While I had visited the island many times with out-of-town guests, I thought, “Why not?” That turned out to be the right decision. It quickly became apparent as we drove past the “No Visitors Beyond This Point” signs. Brandon grew up on the island and lives there today. Behind the scenes, it is a self-sufficient village that includes a U.S. Post Office, a deli, a master woodworking shop, and the best swimming hole I’ve ever seen, among other things. The island is also home to many descendants of the Tabasco legacy. Check out the pics—Wow!
Brandon, thank you, thank you, thank you. You freaking rock! — eating lunch with Jay Florsheim and 3 others at Port Quick Shop.
