I came here for a solo dinner tonight with a coupon from my RI Food Fights Lord of the Wings coupon. Tomaselli’s took over an old catering hall, and I was concerned before I came that I would be one person at a giant table. But then I saw a picture of the bar surrounded with leather padded deal chairs and I knew I needed to sit at that bar asap.
The building is set back from the road and the parking lot is of a decent size, if a bit tight at some of the turns. Walking in, you definitely get the sense it’s a hall but if you’re solo just head left and the bar is right there waiting for you The bartender was a friendly guy, I never got his name. He took great care of me, checked in regularly.
They have an incredible list of wing sauces, and I chose the pepper relish parm wings, which felt so freaking Italian I couldn’t pass it up. I also got a small cheese, pepperoni and black olive pizza. Finally, a sangria to sip while I dined.
The wings….the wings were incredible. Definitely my winner for the month by miles. They will be hard to beat. It was super oily from the peppers, it was dripping down my chin, but it was so tangy and delicious I couldn’t stop eating it until they were all gone. The wings themselves were very meaty and fried hard like I would get in New York state. I think someone in their kitchen is from somewhere upstate New York because I rarely get wings that well fried outside of that state!
After I polished those off, the pizza came. It was piping hot, rectangular and cooked to a golden brown. I ignored the heat and went for a slice. Buttery and crisp crust, rich and thick sauce, extra stretchy cheese, the pie was a lesson in generosity. The pepperonis were crispy like I like and the black olives had a more pronounced flavor than you usually find as well. Top notch pizza all around.
I couldn’t wait to tell my friends about this place, I was texting them in the car about my great experience. Living on the other side of Providence I will definitely be back, for more wings (half priced on Wednesday) and to try some of their entrees. I hear the chicken parm is outstanding!
Until next time, Tomaselli’s. You’ve gained a new regular customer out of me!
The food is fantastic, true Italian and the portions are huge. Our server was Sandra, and she’s a real pro. Prices are reasonable too. I ordered the chicken parmesan and the size of it was rediculous. Pounded out in the traditional Italian way- it was the size of a medium pizza.
All in all, a wonderful dining experience.
The restaurant is unassuming and the dining area is reminiscent of a VFW hall. You’re able to seat yourself where comfortable selecting from an array of banquet style tables; or you may opt to sit at the oval shaped bar in comfortable office style chairs.
Although untraditional, the venue manages to create some warmth, and there’s an observable sense of camaraderie amongst the locals. Several patrons were playing card games at their respective tables while enjoying cocktails as they dined.
Our waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. As new customers, we appreciated her orientating us to the menu layout- in addition to reviewing local favorites/specials. We went with her recommendations which didn’t disappoint.
THE FOOD
The baked stuffie topped with baby scallops and bacon was savory and delicious. The stuffing mixture was the highlight. The herb and butter crust and crispy bacon provided a welcomed contrasting texture from the stuffing. The scallops were a miss because they were overcooked and chewy.
My main course consisted of their famous chicken parmigiana, side penne with vodka sauce, and sautéed spinach. Sincerest compliments to the chef. That vodka sauce was an absolute stunner. Every element of each dish was flavorful and complimentary.
I loved the spinach with peppers. The crunch of the red peppers, the spice blend, and the perfectly cooked spinach rounded out a memorable bite.
The chicken parmigiana is cartoonishly enormous which made me worry it would taste like a frisbee- false alarm. The flavorful breading adhered to the moist and lightly seasoned chicken. The tomato sauce was robust, and the cheese was plentiful. This dish can easily feed 3-4 adults. I shared with my table-mate and still had ample leftovers.
THE VALUE:
Excellent value for the price points and quality of food. A neighborhood gem I’m thankful to have experienced.
The chicken parm is fine. The veal parm is shoe leather.
The pasta, wings and pizza were all good.
This is where you bring your grandparents. Or probably where they choose to bring you. Its the same RI average food you get in most places. Nothing bad but nothing great either.
The staff for the event was very helpful, friendly and engaging.
The location is off the beaten path but worth the search. I am looking forward to return during restaurant hours.
We had the bouriyaki (amazing flavor) wings & the red pepper relish wings (spicy) and what a treat! Definitely different flavor profiles you won’t find anywhere else.
We also got the antipasto salad, small cheese pizza, chicken parm & bowtie pasta with pink sauce. The chicken parm is massive, super thin and crispy!
One of our favorite things about this place is it is a function hall and it’s a party everything we come. If you have kids they can dance, be loud & have a blast! The servers are outstanding and if you are a sit at the bar person, they have comfy computer chairs as seats!
