We came across Los Compadres while in town and decided to give it a go. It is right in the middle of a small plaza so parking is abundant. A sign greeted us at the door for margarita specials as we walked in.
The atmosphere was casual with plenty of seats and a nice full bar. We settled at a table and ordered queso, carnitas, tamales, and flautas. For drinks we had horchata and margaritas.
The margaritas tasted like the pre-mix bottle, just add tequila. The horchata was pretty good.
The queso was orange- I strongly believe in a good queso blanco so this queso missed the spot for me.
The taquitos were a good texture and size but a little simple. The carnitas had a good flavoring but would have been better paired with something else… the pico on the side didn’t cut it. It was a traditional tomato and onion combination and I could barely taste any flavors on it. The chips were pretty good, with a sprinkle of tahini on them? Some red powder that we enjoyed. All in all, the meal was alright but could have used stronger flavors. We also didn’t notice any margarita special pricing on our receipt- perhaps it was a specific item.
Either way, at least there is a decent Mexican restaurant in the area.
Update (Jan 2026):
The bar staff remembered my usual drink, which is welcoming. I favor a tangy tequila drink as a great partner to the food, or a beer or slightly-sweet cocktail. And they remembered my favorite dish, which I’ve ordered here only once before! I love their birria tacos.
It’s tender slow-cooked shredded beef with rich savory flavors too complex to know all the ingredients. The beef picks up the sweet smokiness of mild peppers, maybe chipotle, deeply-marinated for hours with herbs such as cumin and thyme, and caramelized diced onion. Add some queso into a folded soft corn tortiila, soaked in marinade, then pan-seared. Or maybe seared and then filled? It’s like a deeply-colorful super-flavorful super-juicy quesadilla. This birria-dilla is served with a dark reddish consommé of all the flavors of the beef and the marinade, for dipping and dousing and generally risking your clothing to splashes, spills, and wild abandon. I was dipping the freshly fried thin very-lightly-spiced tortilla chips in that luscious consommé more than the zingy fresh chunky red salsa!
They recently (Dec 2025) added a lovely terrifically-detailed mural by a local artist of a pueblo magico, a village of delicious food and good compadres. You know those friends who you always seem to visit at meal-time for a taste of whatever is simmering? These Compadres are those compadres.

Nov 2025 Update! Compadres was making their birria tacos when i stopped by (Nov 2025)! I’ve been hoping for these!
The three birria tacos were tender and full-flavored, filled with marinated juicy shredded braised beef and clear crunchy onion bits, plus a side of clear, savory, reddish consommé dipping-sauce with some beef shreds, with the slightest spiciness. For me, this is the pinnacle of savory beefy taco flavor.
They were served in perfectly grilled corn tortillas with a serious outer crisp yet still chewy.
Their presentation is always well arranged, appetizingly artful, but not “artsy”-silly. 🙂 I got a quick view of some other well-plated meals, and i heard compliments from other happy diners!
My first review here:
Compadres restaurant and bar has really good authentic Mexican food! All the dishes you know, freshly made from family recipes, and specials that you dont want to miss! Moderately-priced menu and drinks, with some fancier dishes and tequilas, too.
This little place has been revamped with a clean new look, around 40 seats, a 12-seat bar, and two huge 60-inch tvs, filled for Ravens games! And they can open the room for 100 for events.
(Sep 2025) I was here for the amazingly delicious tacos. These were generously full of super-tender flavorful slightly-crispy Carnitas and slow-roasted Al Pastor pork marinated for hours in rich broths of chilis, garlic, cumin, maybe some cinnamon, and other herbs and spices. I got them “Compadres-style” which includes soft corn double-tortillas, shredded queso blanco, bright pico sauce, spicier red sauce, and/or milder green sauce, plus jalapeños if you want. So delicious, filled to bursting! Or get cilantro and onion, or good old shredded lettuce and chopped tomato. The red pozole soup is so full of tender flavorful pork in a rich peppery stew. A meal in itself. The empanadas are packages of tender juicy meaty goodness, and if Priscilla says she just made some, say yes! And I had home-made perfectly dense melt-in-your-mouth lightly-caramel flan.
Compadres has a full-bar with a nice selection of tequilas, so i sipped a warming reasonably-priced Teramana Reposado neat, slightly-sweet, full of that tangy smokey flavor of roasted blue agave, softened with a light background of oak-barrel aging, a savory pleasure. They have beers, margaritas, cocktails, spirits of all kinds.
This hidden treasure is in the Waverly Woods strip mall off Marriottsville Rd just north of I-70, south of MD-99 Old Frederick, east on Warwick for half a mile.
Compadres provides the best home-cooking.
George was super communicative and helpful throughout, and their team even set everything up for us, making the party a total breeze.
Can’t wait for my next visit – highly recommend!
Everything you want in a restaurant. I would definitely come back here if I was in the area.
