It has been a while since we last came here and it was a relatively good experience. This time was no different. The staff was friendly and the service was good. The quality of the food was a bit of hit and miss. The French onion soup was a little too watery. The steak was a bit overcooked but everything else was cooked just fine. The wine list was predominantly French (obviously) and the bottle we ordered was very nice. Overall, we had a great night.

Magnifique! If you close your eyes and let your imagination wander, you could be at your favourite little bistrot in the quartieme (fourth arrondisement) in Paris. The food, service and atmosphere are all first class. The waiters know how to make women of a certain age (my book club) feel special, although I could have done without being likened to our waiter’s great aunt! (although he assured me it was a compliment.)
The classics are classic for a reason, and we all enjoyed our various choices of oysters, anchovy toast, steak frite, chocolate souffle and tarte tatin, accompanied by excellent wine. A special venue for a special night – or any night you want to make special.

The food was well served and delicious. Expect the restaurant to be busy on weekends, make sure you have a booking.

You will have food envy if you don’t get the soulffle

We had a terrible experience here because of a waiter named John (a young bald man).

Before visiting, we saw several reviews mentioning racism and bad attitudes. We also noticed some recent reviews saying the service had improved, so we decided to give it a try.

Unfortunately, as soon as we walked in, John was extremely rude and arrogant — no greeting, no smile, no communication at all. When he served our dishes, it honestly felt like he was almost throwing the plates onto the table.

We tried to get the bill by waving to him three times with clear eye contact, but he completely ignored us. I finally had to call out to him, and instead of apologising, he said there was no need to yell.

Another staff member told us that John used to work here, left for a while, and recently returned. That actually makes sense, because the service reviews seemed much better when he was away.

I hope the owner sees this review. Your food is good, but the service — especially from John — really does not match the quality of your restaurant.

This is such a good restaurant. As always, the food was exceptional. The oysters today were as good as I’ve ever been served. My onion soup was exceptional too. And, the eye fillet was perfectly cooked and presented. We chose a few lovely wines from the excellent wine list too. The service was fabulous throughout and we tipped accordingly. I’ve had so many good experiences here over the years. It’s simply one of the best places to dine out in Melbourne

Fun atmosphere. The staff are hilarious! They make us laugh every time we visit.
Delicious food. They make a 10/10 dirty Gin martini.
They were a little bit lazy with my gluten free order last time though. There was bread on my plate and it was touching my food… not ideal.

Had anothet wonderful dining experience at Bistrot Thierry. The salmon was fresh and beautifully prepared, and the scallops omg, my go to dish were absolutely divine. Perfectly cooked, delicate, and full of flavour.

The scotch fillet was cooked to perfection and paired beautifully with the béarnaise sauce, which added just the right richness to the dish. And the chocolate soufflé… simply amazing. Light, decadent, and full of deep chocolate flavour. If you have a sweet tooth, you will absolutely love the soufflé!

Overall, a fantastic meal with standout dishes that we’ll definitely be back for.

Had high hopes for Bistro Thierry, service let it down.

We had browsed the menu before arriving and tried to order a few soups while we continued looking through the rest, but the request was refused — we were told to order everything at once. Fair enough, but we then spent the next 15 minutes trying to get someone’s attention to actually place our full order. Multiple waiters avoided eye contact while seating others and taking new tables before us.

When we finally got someone to take our order, the interaction felt flat — no real recommendations offered and the staff member seemed uninterested or unmotivated. We had water poured at the beginning, but never received any refills. We also asked for butter several times — each time acknowledged, but it never came.

Food-wise, it was a mixed bag:
Snails were decent but nothing special
• The anchovy starter l came straight from a can. Bread was okay.
• Calamari was lightly fried and had a good sauce — probably one of the better dishes.
• The steak tartare was my favourite, but the way the egg was served felt a bit unhygienic and left me feeling quite gassy afterwards.
• The French onion soup was more like a piece of bread with melted cheese on top of some onion — lacked the depth or finesse I expected.
• Beef bourguignon was two lukewarm pieces of cheek with decent mash. Fries were undercooked and floppy.
• The steak was cooked properly and decent overall. The mushroom sauce was on the lighter side, not very creamy but acceptable.
• Duck was chewy and not particularly tender, and came with a basic veggie mix.

The only positive on the service side was the food being delivered in the correct order and without delay — but that was about it.

I also couldn’t help but notice the contrast in how some tables were treated compared to ours. Being of Asian background, I did feel we were somewhat dismissed, and after reading through other reviews, I can see similar sentiments shared by others with similar experiences. Hopefully it was just an off day, but it left a pretty disappointing impression overall.

Excellent classic french food. Make sure you book and if you’re in an early sitting they will need the table back after your time, these guys are popular. Make sure you get the chocolate soufflé it’s their specialty

We came here for my birthday and had an excellent experience.
There were plenty of choices available on the menu. Service was commendable as well.
The food was served promptly and well paced out between entrees and main meals.
The beef tartare was amazing, especially with the mini Tabasco that was served with it. The escargot with butter was another favourite of ours and went well with the bread served.
Among the food that we had, the duck comfit, the entrecote steak, and the lamb rack were very well cooked and tasted heavenly.
Overall, it was a very pleasant and enjoyable experience .
