I drove the truck northeast out of the Ranchos because I heard a rumor about a place called Paradise Valley. I figured with a name like that, it must be the capital of our people—maybe they have a golden Walmart or a landfill that allows public scavenging. I pulled up to the Paradise Valley Saloon Bar & Grill and immediately checked my pulse to see if I had died and gone to 1885. This place isn’t just ‘Old West,’ it’s ‘Pre-Electricity’ vibes. It’s quiet. Too quiet. I sat there for twenty minutes waiting to hear a distant siren, a domestic dispute, or at least a generator backfiring, but all I heard was a cow mooing three miles away. It was terrifying.
I walked into the Saloon hoping for a brawl, but everyone was just… friendly? There were dollar bills stapled to the wall, which I assumed was a local banking system, so I tried to make a deposit with a handful of nickels. The bartender didn’t get it.
I saw a local walking down the street and he didn’t even look like he was twitching. I asked him, ‘Buddy, where’s the action? Where’s the guy trying to sell a stolen catalytic converter?’ He just pointed at the mountains and said, ‘We like the peace.
I don’t get it. Why would you live here? It’s so far from the Flying J that by the time you get back with your Tornados, they’re cold. The buildings look like they’re held together by ghosts and good intentions.

Just passing through on our way back from the tristate point. Nita was the most gracious host. Beer was ice cold, cool outside with the door open and the wood stove going.

Started out slow… but that turned out to be JUST RIGHT. Dennis and Nita were fun and friendly. Oh, and did I mention they make great drinks and really good lunch?! After lunch, we walked around town looking at the history.

Went here for Saturday night steak night. Very small bar in a very small town. Wasn’t sure what to expect. Steaks were cooked outside on open flame grill. Sides were served potluck style by the grill masters wife. Must say it was very good. Seating was limited inside the var area where you are surrounded by old style antique ish relics and walls covered with autographed dollar bills. If my deer hunt doesn’t end by the end of the week, I will go back for another Saturday night steak!! (Bone in ribeye cooked to your liking)

In 1985 I spent a summer surveying the forest service rode over Hinkey pass. Was in the area and decided to see if the saloon was still open, it hasn’t changed in 40 years.
