It was a busy Sunday. Football crowd, phone orders, and loud TV. The older lady with the bright colored hair at the register was nice enough. I told her it was my first time there. She was proud to say they’ve been there for over 25 years. I ordered the cheesesteak with mushrooms to take out and, seeing Italian WATER ICE on the menu above me, ordered one of those. By the time I got home after 25 minutes or so, I proceeded to tackle my cheesesteak & mushroom hoagie. The bread had shriveled up some, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. I am no connoisseur of Philly cheesesteaks. I am more familiar with the Italian hoagies. I think that was more affordable to me as a kid. So next time I’ll order one of those Italian hoagies and another Italian water ice.
As a kid, I remember getting water ice and soft pretzels for a quarter each. Especially in the summers on those hot, humid South Philly days. They were the best.
The water ice at Philly Frank’s is over $6 after taxes. For me, it’s worth the occasional treat.
I asked for a suggestion on the sandwich since they have a lot on their menu.
I bought that one and I decided to get their frings. Their onion rings looked like crap. I don’t like to waste food so I still ate them.
I did actually enjoy the fries.
It took me about 10 minutes to eat them.
When I opened my sandwich it was soggy! It didn’t sit for “that long”….the sandwich wasn’t good either. I don’t know maybe…just maybe…if the lady had asked me if I wanted to eat it there or to-go it would have been less soggy. They packaged it as to-go then were shocked that I sat at the table to eat. SMH!
The best part was the cheez whiz sauce. I should have bought more cheez whiz to drown the meat and add in flavor. Sorry but it’s true!
Unfortunately I will not be recommending this place to anyone. Especially after paying $27.00 plus for a sandwich, frings and a large drink. I also left like $5.00 for a tip.
I actually don’t mind to travel for good food places and this isn’t on the list.
More props to the people who actually like it.
What really makes this place special is the people. Even if it’s been a while, the staff still greet me by name and make me feel at home. That kind of genuine care and connection is rare today. You can tell this multi-generational family business takes pride in everything they do—from the food to the warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Philly Frank’s isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a part of the community. Highly recommend!
Being from the Northeast I love me a good cheese steak.
Had high hopes when I saw this business’s listing.
Ordered the works with provolone and whiz.
Gave me cold whiz on the side and said they cant put it on the sub because it will rip. What??
Opened the parchment paper around the sub and had a heaping of grease pour all over me.
Nearly all the cheese in the sub was stuck to the paper.
Bread was hard.
Raw onions when I ordered cooked.
What gives? I’m hoping this was just an isolated incident there’s no way others are leaving positive reviews with this quality I received.
I didn’t expect Philly quality in SD but I genuinely could have gotten better at Subway.
$20 down the drain.
That is all.
Please excuse the half eaten food in my pics. I could not wait to start eating.
