Philly Frank’s Steaks caught my eye in San Marcos. I rarely come out this way. Years in fact. But on a recent visit to a nearby vacuum cleaner repair shop, I saw this place on Google Maps. Had to try it. I lived in South Philly for 3 years as a military kid over a half century ago. Next to the old Naval Hospital. Yo!!! Hoagies, Italian water ice, and big soft pretzels with mustard on top. I had to drop in and try this place.

It was a busy Sunday. Football crowd, phone orders, and loud TV. The older lady with the bright colored hair at the register was nice enough. I told her it was my first time there. She was proud to say they’ve been there for over 25 years. I ordered the cheesesteak with mushrooms to take out and, seeing Italian WATER ICE on the menu above me, ordered one of those. By the time I got home after 25 minutes or so, I proceeded to tackle my cheesesteak & mushroom hoagie. The bread had shriveled up some, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. I am no connoisseur of Philly cheesesteaks. I am more familiar with the Italian hoagies. I think that was more affordable to me as a kid. So next time I’ll order one of those Italian hoagies and another Italian water ice.

As a kid, I remember getting water ice and soft pretzels for a quarter each. Especially in the summers on those hot, humid South Philly days. They were the best.

The water ice at Philly Frank’s is over $6 after taxes. For me, it’s worth the occasional treat.

Stopped in to get an Italian hoagie after I had ordered a cheesesteak last night through GrubHub. From the first bite I was transported back to the Delaware valley! This place is 100% legit and a must for any Philly area transplant. Bsome of the best I have had outside of the Delaware valley. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. I will definitely be back!

It’s awesome! They really love their philly! Pictures and memorabilia everywhere inside. The sandwiches are on point. Bread from Philly too! They’re older people so you know the love is there. Prices are a little on the high side, but that’s what you get for great authentic food. I’ll take it! Philly franks is a must.

A friend told me about this place and I wish he didn’t. I found out his birthday is coming up and I wanted to get him a gift card for his birthday. I drove almost 30 miles up here after work. I wanted to try it too since I was there.
I asked for a suggestion on the sandwich since they have a lot on their menu.
I bought that one and I decided to get their frings. Their onion rings looked like crap. I don’t like to waste food so I still ate them.
I did actually enjoy the fries.
It took me about 10 minutes to eat them.
When I opened my sandwich it was soggy! It didn’t sit for “that long”….the sandwich wasn’t good either. I don’t know maybe…just maybe…if the lady had asked me if I wanted to eat it there or to-go it would have been less soggy. They packaged it as to-go then were shocked that I sat at the table to eat. SMH!
The best part was the cheez whiz sauce. I should have bought more cheez whiz to drown the meat and add in flavor. Sorry but it’s true!
Unfortunately I will not be recommending this place to anyone. Especially after paying $27.00 plus for a sandwich, frings and a large drink. I also left like $5.00 for a tip.
I actually don’t mind to travel for good food places and this isn’t on the list.
More props to the people who actually like it.

Philly Frank’s is a true local treasure. I’ve been coming here for over 20 years, and the quality never misses. The mushroom cheesesteak hoagie is my favorite—packed with flavor and always made just right.

What really makes this place special is the people. Even if it’s been a while, the staff still greet me by name and make me feel at home. That kind of genuine care and connection is rare today. You can tell this multi-generational family business takes pride in everything they do—from the food to the warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Philly Frank’s isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a part of the community. Highly recommend!

Nothing spectacular the cheesesteak meat was seasoned well meat was good my issue with the cheesesteak was the amoroso roll was not toasted at all a toastie roll would have made a good cheesesteak great it was just to much bread took away from the meat I also got the cheese french fries I prefer a fatter frie but that’s just personal so not judging that the cheese fries left a weird after taste don’t know if oil was old or what but ehhh I have been wanting to try this place foe a long time and I was not wowed nothing special

Terrible.

Being from the Northeast I love me a good cheese steak.
Had high hopes when I saw this business’s listing.

Ordered the works with provolone and whiz.

Gave me cold whiz on the side and said they cant put it on the sub because it will rip. What??

Opened the parchment paper around the sub and had a heaping of grease pour all over me.

Nearly all the cheese in the sub was stuck to the paper.

Bread was hard.

Raw onions when I ordered cooked.

What gives? I’m hoping this was just an isolated incident there’s no way others are leaving positive reviews with this quality I received.

I didn’t expect Philly quality in SD but I genuinely could have gotten better at Subway.

$20 down the drain.

Gotta say I’ve never in my life had a Philly cheesesteak that had no cheese .

Used to come here a lot when I lived up in Carlsbad a few years ago, it used to be awesome. Now it sucks. The size of the sandwich went down like to a baby sandwich. Very skinny very small and the fries tasted like crap. For how expensive it is this place sucks now. Won’t ever come back.

This is the only place I go outside of New York, New Jersey or Pennsylvania for a cheesesteak. It is awesome deliciousness at its finest! The bread is amazing they know how to cook the steak and mix it all in with the cheese and the toppings. They really know how to make crispy french fries and onion rings. Overall a true five star restaurant.
Please excuse the half eaten food in my pics. I could not wait to start eating.
