Saw this place pop up on a mutual’s social media and decided to stop by for lunch as the food looked delicious. Upon entering we were greeted by the welcoming island vibes. The staff was extremely helpful in answering all our questions about the different Tongan foods and gave us their recommendations.
My girlfriend decided to go with the Ika Pampano with the Kumala and wow, possibly the best fish I have had in a while, I kept stealing bites of it, the crispiness of the skin, with the fattiness of the fish was amazing! Plus the gravy it came with, was absolutely delicious! I got the Mix Meat Plate with the short ribs, which were decent, Chicken Katsu which was fried perfectly crisp, their Katsu sauce is fantastic, and the Ota Ika, which I saw everyone buy, was really delicious. We also got a Otai Mango, which was so refreshing, not too sweet, the mango was delicious and the coconut really added a nice balance!
I definitely want to come back to try the pork belly and the lamb, as well as get the fish dishes and chicken again! I highly recommend Kai Mai! Also, their portion sizes are an amazing value, especially for how well cooked everything is!

It’s a bit difficult to locate if it’s your first time going there because it’s not facing the main road (State Street).
I’ve gotten food there a few times and my main go to is the fried pompano and keleve sipi. Food is good but they could do a bit with the service. The second time I was there, I was sitting waiting for my order and they had it ready for some time and it was just sitting at the counter. I was paying attention the whole time because I left my phone in the car. They didn’t call my name or a number and it wasn’t until I went to ask because I have been seeing the bag siting there and no one was claiming it. They just nod over to it when I asked and I left vowing never to go there again…But then I had lunch with a cousin of mine who insisted on going there and so I gave it a try hoping my experience would be better but I remembered that the same girl at the cashier was the one who was there at my last visit. This girl does not smile which is a bit odd for a Polynesian establishment because we’re from the Friendly Islands are we not? She not only have a hard time smiling but I somehow got the feeling she doesn’t want to be there so I kinda felt like I was a burden and not an asset to their business so yeah I don’t think I’ll go to Kai Mai again. I always tip them good too smh

This place is immediately south of the Chinatown Plaza, turn west at the Arby’s and this place shares a parking lot with Arby’s.

I got the Double Lu plate for $15 and the Lu was good- delicately seasoned and not overly salty. I was a little dubious about getting the taro as my side dish since the Tongan way to cook taro makes it mushy and pasty, but the girl told me it had only been in the steamer for an hour, and it ended up pretty firm. If you go there later in the day you might opt for the banana.

I read the complaints about the service but both women working there were polite and prompt to respond to me. No issues. The service vibe is kind of like back in the islands, where somehow it feels like the restaurant is doing you a favor by providing food to you, and you are grateful to get it. Just made the experience more authentic.

I ordered a mix plate of teriyaki chicken, katsu chicken, Lu sipi, with rice & macaroni salad, came out to be $18 and some cent. Omg I was so surprised with my order/plate cause it was definitely worth every penny. My daughter LOVE her katsu plate. Food is spot on! Customer service, hella friendly and helpful. Then I went at order a pompano fish on the side w/gravy, ($5 +taxes) so ONO. Definitely going back for more. Thank you KAIMAI KRILL

If I could give this place a 0 rating, I would. I’ve been here a couple times and it’s always a hit or miss. The only time the food and customer service was good was the first time. Since then, the food has been horrible along with their customer service. The woman at the register make people wanna leave as soon as they walk in, always mean mugging and rushing people. The food has been causing an itch or burn sensation in my mouth which means their taro, manioke or Lu is raw or undercooked. I’m never going back there just a waste of my time and money.

Clean restaurant, food was good, excellent customer service. We had the lamb with gravy, fish with gravy and Lu Sipi, ordered Ota ika along with mango Otai. All delicious and authentic Tongan cuisine. Not over salted or seasoned.

My honest review of this place is, crappy customer service. The customer service here is the exactly why business fail so quick. I got much love for my tongan peeps but this is not the spot. Everything starts with customer service. We are a Samoan family trying to show love the best way we know how and supporting a polynesian business it. I honestly wasn’t even that hungry and just trying to support. Customer service needs to understand that our languages differ and should act in accordance.by default just speak English and not laugh all because I don’t understand the tongan words. In closing I’ll be taking my business back to Pacific Sea
The put a smile on there face and say please and thank you. I really not the one for disrespect but I was trying to show family a good time and failed miserably. I hope and pray you ready my review and do better with the young lady working the counter or else you will probably be back into working for the man. Our community is small and word travels far. I’m so glad things didnt get physical. Best of luck to your business but I won’t be back.
