Went to Original Hotcake House on Powell this morning : r/Portland

It’s a solid and historic joint, but it’s not very good overall, so many better options all over town. The meal in this picture looks terrible …

The outside was very dark and was hard to see from street in the dark. The gentleman working was very friendly and welcoming and the restaurant had an old diner feel which I like. The food was not the greatest but I think we should have gotten breakfast foods and not dinner foods. They also don’t take orders for pick up which kind of sucked because we were driving through town but understandable.

This was a great place to eat. The service was great and the food came out as ordered. My only dissatisfaction was a bathroom that had no working toilet and faucet. The jukebox was wonderful with a great selection. The prices were about on point with other places. I would definitely recommend stopping here.

All right this place is very good, my dad has been here before and he’s vegan and not too many vegan options so he was only able to get hash browns, but not the end of the world it’s really not a vegan place. I got the bacon cheeseburger with Fry’s and the burger was very good, it was a normal size nothing big nothing small just a normal size bacon cheeseburger but it was good. Prices aren’t too bad, with a drink and food came out to like $19 for one person. Got our food within 10 minutes and the place was somewhat busy so highly recommend this place for a decent meal

The food is fantastic here! Pancakes at home never come close to the taste of these pancakes . Also they have one of the best burgers I have had in a long time the flavors are simple and that’s what makes the food comforting and delicious. I love stoping by for coffee and pancakes as treat to myself

Great food, kind people cooking and serving 24/7. What more could you ask for? Oh right, if you’re prudy Portland, you can still eat here, no matter.

Staff were friendly, though not very communicative or helpful.
Compared to other breakfast spots in the area, food portion was pretty good for the price. Still, it was overpriced.
The place had a strange smell & kinda stunk. It was like a mix of french toast and body odor.. weirdly. Smell can have an impact on taste, so it lowered the quality of the food. I got sausage links and an egg, both of which had little flavor. The french toast was nothing special either. Coffee was fresh, and it was nice that they had vanilla creamer.
Bathrooms were pretty dirty. Didn’t look like it had been cleaned in a couple days.

I don’t recommend, sorry.

This “iconic” SE Portland diner is mid.

Everything missed.

Hash browns are greasy and cooked inconsistently. Some burnt, some uncooked, all greasy.

Pancakes were pancakes… But then again, they better be.

The bacon was burnt. The Italian was burnt and $18 despite including one sausage. Turn your flattop down for the love of god.

The over-medium eggs were over-hard.

$4.25 self serve diner coffee is criminal.

Also, seating is cramped.

Skip it. Tik Tok lied.

My kids loved this place. They had pancakes bigger than their faces and “the best french toast of my life”. They were very impressed with the balls of butter.
The party melt is the meat we’re ever had! Feeding a family of 5 for $55 is not bad these days!

I heard of this restaurant on Tiktok and I was influenced to come check it out as it’s only 13 minutes down the road. This classic breakfast place did not disappoint classic breakfast food like pancakes, eggs, and the like done on the griddle cooked with just the right amount of crunch around the edges I’ll be back again for this one!

The limited parking space has always been a bit of a hassle, which kept us from coming back for a while, but after several years, we decided to give it another try. The overall atmosphere is just like it used to be, but we noticed a new addition—an extra room was created in the back right corner, with 5 or 6 table seats, or maybe even more. It’s still the same setup as before, where you order while standing in line and then take a seat.
We had the Big ‘D,’ Hawaiian Omelette with pancakes, a large soda, and coffee. The patty in the Big ‘D’ was juicy and delicious, with the meat juices sealed inside. The Hawaiian Omelette was creamy on the inside, filled with ham, pineapple, and other ingredients, and it was delicious! The side hotcakes were a little on the smaller side, but in general, the pancakes here are huge, thick, and incredibly fluffy—by far the best compared to others. All the dishes are big in portion, so there’s plenty to enjoy. As usual, the place was bustling with customers today. ✨
