The “King” size Reuben was what I consider an average size.
The house sauce (their mustard sauce) was uninspiring to say the least. I would ditch it in favor of Thousand Island for sure. The sauerkraut was so acidic and sour, it over-powered the taste of the corned beef which in itself, was less than full flavored and a bit on the dry side due to the grilling to warm it, which in my opinion, is one of the worst ways to heat up corned beef. You get that frying pan taste. I asked where they source their corned beef and was in Chicago. Chicago? Why Chicago? Some of the best corned beef in the US is made in Detroit. Wigley’s, Grobbel’s, Sy Ginsberg (the best!), etc. Why wouldn’t you use a local source?
The bread which comes in pumpernickel (odd choice for a “house” sandwich when Jewish or Russian rye or even an onion roll is the standard) that was thin and broke apart upon eating the sandwich which is a no, no in corned beef culture. It must hold up to the hot, moist corned beef which by the way, this sandwich was neither.
A bit disappointing as we were hoping their signature dish could live up to the hype, which it didn’t.
As a comparison, try Uncle Harry’s Deli Restaurant on Mack Ave. in St Clair Shores to have a very, very good (possibly the best in Metro Detroit) Reuben. You’ll never go back to HOR.
We did try the beef barley soup which seems to be a herd favorite. Meh..
my club sandwich had no cheese on it and the meat was burnt and dried. mozzarella sticks I asked for marinara even in the notes even on the receipt and received none.
The reuben’s looked, smelled and i imagined tasted amazing.
Fast friendly service with the owners on site.
These kinds of restaurants are at risk to being swallowed up by the tidal wave of cheaper , less good corporate restaurants.
Places like this need to not only be saved but also visited and enjoyed. Awesome sandwich, will be back for that namesake shortly!
The location is a remodeled Taco Bell the is very nicely done. The atmosphere is quite nice.
The owners are very nice, and it was great to see them interact with the regulars.
I also used this place for drive through years ago to pick up a phone order. Everything is always great. I highly recommend this place.
