In the late 1800’s, the United States Life Saving Service, now known as the US Coast Guard, built a station of solid granite perched overlooking Narragansett Bay. The architects, responsible for the resilient building, are the famed McKim, Mead & White. Today it is home to the Coast Guard House Restaurant.
Local seafood in a circa-1945 haunt; the upstairs deck bar & dining area has panoramic ocean views.

We were starving, so we ordered the popcorn shrimp appetizer right away instead of ordering any drinks. Our waitress, Susan B., was totally accommodating and put that order in right away, then gave us plenty of time to decide what other food we would have. She also thoughtfully told us the specials right away.
The popcorn shrimp appetizer was a great start, but we were really impressed with the greens & grains salad that we ordered as our second course. It was a little bit sweet from the house champagne vinaigrette and the almond granola, so the saltiness of the feta cheese it was served with provided a perfect balance. The restaurant can divide the salad onto two plates for a $2.00 charge, but we just shared off of a single plate since we had our bread and butter plates.
For entrees, the lobster mac & cheese was really excellent with lots of lobster mixed into and placed on top of the mac & cheese. But, the linguine seafood pasta special was the best plate of the night. The sauce it was served in was delicious, and the dish had lobster and other seafood that just really brought it home.
The holiday decor in the restaurant (in December 2025) was charming and the views of the bay, even at night, were nice. There was plenty of free street parking along Ocean Rd close to the restaurant, but they also offer valet parking.
Very highly recommend The Coast Guard House and can’t wait to return!
After reviewing the menu we placed our order. There was a 30% discount on selected bottles which for us was a lovely pilot origin.
Within a short time our food arrived. My wife was going light witj the lobster bisque and a house salad. I chose the special which was a penne with shrimp and scallops served in a delightful cream sauce.
Our lunch was beyond our expectations. Coupled with the view made for an amazing dining adventure. Service and food were excellent. Enjoy.
We were early for our igloo reservation, so we stopped at the bar for a pre-dinner drink. Jim, our bar server, was very personable & professional. The bar has a nice vibe -and Jim is part of the reason for that!
The hostess (who’s name escapes me) was able to get us into our igloo a bit early.
The igloo’s (which have a $100 upcharge) are very cool, and worth it for a special occassion! (I should mention that these 6 igloos allowed the Coast Guard House to remain open during COVID -keeping their staff employed.) They each have a different theme. Ours was named “Bountiful” -think Autumn. They have an electric fireplace, a heater, and a bluetooth speaker that you cak connect to and use your playlist, Sirius, etc. They can hold 8 people. Nice sofas, tables, & had a basket of blankets as well.
Our server Nick was very attentive, and teriffic overall, with one exception that I’ll get into at the end of my review.
It was Vintage Tuesday (20% orr any bottle) so we bought a nice Montepulciano which we enjoyed.
We planned on a half dozen oysters (Mystic) and half dozen littlenecks. Nick suggested their Anchor Platter -which added 2 huge shrimp to them. That was a good move!
For entrées Pam had the Salmon which she really enjoyed. I had the pasta special: chopped scallops, shrimp, & lobster in a cream sauce on papperdelle. I was surprised by how much lobster it had, and it was delicious
For dessert, we shared a piece of cheesecake, coated in graham cracker crumbs. It was tasty! However, my reservation had a birthday notation, and I reminded the restaurant through their Open Table texting that it was a birthday (which they said they knew from the reservation.) They said to tell our server and they would put a candle on the dessert for her. I made sure Nick knew it was her birthday as well. …No candle on the dessert. Certainly an oversight, but it was a special occassion & I did my part 3 times. I’d love to give the Service a 5 -because it was, other than this. I wish there was a 4.8 option, but there is not. Ignoring this would not be helpful to the next person with a birthday.
We will certainly be back again!
My wife’s birthday is February 13th, followed immediately by Valentine’s Day, so I wanted to plan something special. Four months ago I reserved one of the igloos for February 15th, invited friends, coordinated with the kids, and even arranged to pick up her favorite gluten-free donuts instead of a cake. Everything was set.
Fast forward to the day of our reservation. My kids and friends were already there when my son called to say they couldn’t find the reservation. We were 10 minutes away, sitting in the car together, and there was no turning back. When we arrived, the staff kindly searched everywhere, but the igloos were fully booked and my confirmation email had mysteriously vanished.
This is the moment where many people would get upset or start pointing fingers — but that didn’t happen. Instead, the staff and ownership immediately focused on solutions. The owner personally stepped in and arranged a table for us in a beautiful spot overlooking the water. No stress, no blame, just genuine hospitality and care.
What could have been a disaster became one of the best nights we’ve had in a long time. The food, the service, the atmosphere, and the company were all perfect.
Thank you to the entire team for turning a stressful situation into such a memorable and special evening. It truly meant a lot to us.
They have both indoor and outdoor seats. The beach offers an additional soothing and vibrant atmosphere.
They have a variety of cuisines with a focus on seafood. The price is a little bit high. The service was good.
The linguine with clams and fried calamari is the best among all, and I highly recommend it. The clams are literally fresh, combined with the savoury sauces. The outside of the calamari is crispy but yet very chewy. The pork chop was good. The crab cake is incredibly soft.
