This small joint is tucked right before Small Batch bar in downtown Winston-Salem. Their menu is pretty small, consisting only of chicken sandwiches and the lone fish sandwich, but let me tell you, there is nothing else you need.
I was tempted to get the chicken and waffles, which I will surely get next time, but I opted for the fish sandwich. It is summertime, and I love seafood in the summer, and it was a home run. The batter was crispy and flavorful, so I could still taste the cod underneath all those gorgeous seasonings. I got the mild seasoning, which had a great flavor and a good spice level. The slaw also played a significant role in the sandwich too, providing some needed lightness and vegetable crunch in the crispy fish sandwich. The fries that I got with my sandwich were bomb as well, they were just crinkle fries, but that had a great seasoning on them, and the “Come back Sauce” (made with horseradish) was oh so tasty and provided a great flavor to the fries, and I ended up dipping some of my cod in it. The sauce made me think of Outback Steakhouse’s blooming onion sauce, but that is a good thing!
My Girlfriend got the chicken sandwich (The Timothy) with mac and cheese. This mac and cheese was delicious, nice and creamy, and cheesy. However, the pasta was wayyyyy overdone, but that’s understandable in this dish and a very common theme in restaurant mac & cheese.
One thing I noticed about this restaurant is that they had a hot wing challenge. If you consume the spiciest wings on the menu within a specific time frame, you get to personalize a plate, and they will stick it on the wall to commemorate the pain and heat that you endured. It is not really for me, but it is there if you are a masochist.
*side note: we are spicy lovers and the medium was delicious but had our nose running (fair warning) You do have the option to order your chicken without the spice, too. We had some friends do that.
The first time we’ve ever had Nashville hot chicken was at Hattie B’s in Nashville. It was delicious and no hot chicken has ever compared since then. So I was a bit skeptical about Timmy’s framing their hot chicken as Nashville-styled fried chicken. That quickly changed.
For drinks, Hubs ordered the John Daly. He made drew comparisons from an Arnold Palmer, but instead, it was a John Daly because it’s spiked I think? Tito’s vodka. Preggo brain kicking in here. I didn’t get to have any, but he really liked it!
My husband ordered, “The Tim” – a fried chicken, pickle with comeback sauce sandwich with the “very hot” spice level. This was the second to hottest you could have, the hottest being hellfire. I took a bite and it tasted like perfection. The spice was just right and had a lot of flavor. Have you ever eaten something spicy that was obnoxious to be obnoxious? This wasn’t the case. Not only was it spicy, it was also very delicious. Hubby liked it and I will be ordering it next time we visit. Totally our new favorite spicy chicken around!
I ordered whole wings which was a dry rub in their signature spice, also “very hot”. I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much and probably won’t reorder. Could just be a preference. I love dry rubs, but it was not crispy as I would have expected and for some reason, it tasted really salty for me.
Hubs and I also both ordered the mac and cheese for sides and it was awesome. Definitely some of the best mac and cheese we’ve had around so all in all, a satisfying lunch! Can’t wait to come back.
