We came for the rice bowls and tried the Garlic Buta Toro and Truffle Cream Gyupasta. Both were absolutely delicious – so good that we ended up ordering more to take home! If you love Japanese food, this place delivers. Plenty of free parking, which is always a win in Austin.
The food is reliably delicious, my third time here. Never had a miss.
The starters are very fairly priced, and sooo delicious. The lunch entrees come with a spring roll and soup, absolute fantastic deal.
You absolutely should give this place a try.
It’s weird that your focus is on my take about Mexican cuisine, that I vaguely mentioned once.. (instead of IDK acknowledging the shadiness/fake reviews!). I didn’t voice ANY “strong feelings” toward Mexican food. All I said was “it ALMOST tastes like mexican food or SOMETHING”. In no way was I criticizing Mexican cuisine, I was stating how it tastes SIMILAR to Mexican cuisine flavors rather than the typical flavors of an Asian/Japanese resturant. Basically saying, this is not authentic Japanese food/flavor and you shouldn’t give the idea to the consumer that it is.
Perhaps it was an off night and it would be more tolerable on a better day/during the day, but I don’t see how it could be drastically better due to the meat quality. Maybe you have this “great” chef, but the other cooks may not have the same diligence as him and therefore not produce the same quality dishes (I doubt this chef was working when I placed my order late at night!). Nonetheless, a “great” chef can only go so far with low quality ingredients.
TL;DR – Their food is low quality and The business is super shady – 0/10.
The flavor of the Garlic Gyudon was OK, but that was pretty much it for positives. There was barely any meat for $17 entree and half of it was fatty and inedible. Clearly not the same as the picture advertised. The Signature Donburi Sauce tasted extremely weird and not as described, almost stale? Artifical? They also didn’t include the additional sauce I paid $2 for. The chicken entree is horrendous because of the artificial sauce, the flavors don’t match the dish and it almost tastes like mexican food or something it’s just weird and atypical for Asian food. You can just taste how low quality everything is.
Also – This place only has 1 true positive review on Doordash. Look carefully at the “people” reviewing. They only reviewed this resturant and the other resturant they own (the Panang Future restaurant this actually is). They are also literally some of the business owners’ names too. If they have a locked profile that’s even more suspicious. Pay attention to the wording too – they’re very similar. Very shady for a restaurant to have so many fake reviews! Instead of replying to my review, they just added more fake reviews lol.
I saw someone mentioned the beef being fatty, but that’s exactly how gyūdon is traditionally made. So again, texture is spot on!
Best gyūdon I’ve had in Austin so far!
I’ve been in the restaurant business in the front of the house and back of the house since 1998 and I have to say this place is highly highly recommended.
Keep up the Great work sushibox atx!!!!!
