You can tell when servers believe what they’re saying. Kyle not only believed what he was saying, but was also an awesome advocate for the best way to navigate the menu. My wife and I did not order an entree. We ordered an appetizer, a salad, and 3 smaller plates. At under $100 for the two of us to have plenty of food and enjoy a wonderful menu, it’s high on our return list.
The Brussels chips, dill wedge salad, and mac n’ cheese gnocchi were all of special note and were phenomenal all the way through. Specifically, the duck wings were one of the best bites I’ve had as of recent. Won’t even describe them — just incredibly well done. The crab fries are solid as well. My only complaint is that I wanted to try more, but I was physically unable to eat anything else.
Go here.
Tonight I only tried new things off of their menu since I haven’t been there in a while. We had the cheese ball, which they’re always switching up the toppings for so we get it every time. As well as the artichoke cake and the hand pies, and the bang-bang asparagus. My fiancé got the mixed grill florentine. And of course we had to take a dessert home regardless of how full we were, so we got the cannoli. All to die for.
I don’t even have words for the way the flavors all seem to just blend perfectly. As a pretty picky eater, this is the one place I will try anything at least once and try to get the fullest experience of the dish.
The staff here is amazing. The servers are so knowledgeable on the menu and give their own recommendations. The owner is a huge part of production every time I’ve ever been in, running the show, but being as helpful as possible and involved in the running of food, expo, and hosting. They seem to be a great leader and boss and everyone works as a team which is important in a smaller place.
The people, food, and atmosphere are the highest of quality. This place is a hidden gem and always worth every penny, definitely make a reservation and give everything on the menu the chance to blow your mind!
Our server was wonderful, attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and able to accommodate interruptions we may have caused with ordering extras – though, it should be noted that something was missing from our order, but it wasn’t charged to us, and it was an addition, so no harm done.
The dinner:
The food was brilliant. The crab rollgoons dish was one of the most interesting, well crafted, and complex dishes I’ve had at any restaurant in the world. It was a clear head above any other dish ever sold to me in Haddonfield.
The burrata dish in and of itself was good, if not a bit run-of-the-mill. Nothing I would order again. I was a little miffed that I was paying near 20 dollars for a burrata whose outer layer was a 3/4 of an inch thick. Frankly, they could have recognized this with a bit more care in the expedition of the dish, so it’s worth mentioning.
The world’s best hotdog lived up to the name. While I find the marketing gimmick of wagyu for hotdogs, chili, burgers – really, anything where you yourself as a chef control how the fat is incorporated into the meat – to be a bit smarmy, the hotdog was one of the highlights of the night. It had such an intense salty fervor, but it never felt sharp or painful; never dry. Just bold. The peanut butter sauce dripped heavily, and I was more than happy to scoop it up with the sourdough from the burrata.
My Cosmic Brownie was flat out insane. My wife scoffed (lovingly) at the idea of white chocolate shell, but we were both fanatical over the texture. And the cloyingly sweet white chocolate bounced off the bitter brownie beautifully!
Where I fell short was the hanger steak. My favorite cut – I order it every chance I get. Great crust, perfect medium throughout, and hats off to the chef, because any cook knows that hanger is temperamental! My issue was the “whipped goat cheese?” It tasted like a tzatziki sauce sans cucumber, and completely overpowered everything. I could barely taste the meat or potato. It soured me on a $43 dish, and effectively ruined a wonderful piece of cooking, otherwise. There was also an unknown gastrique on the plate, which had a great tang to it. Almost tasted of a pomegranate-balsamic? It’s not listed on the menu, so it’ll remain a mystery, but it was a wonderful balance to the sauce which drowned everything out, yet so scarce on the plate that I barely got to taste it.
Finally, and the crux of my issue with our experience – which I believe to be a completely unfair criticism: it was just too loud in there, man. I couldn’t hear my party unless we raised our voices to an uncomfortable level. It’s an awful cycle of: a song comes on, too loudly; one table near the speakers attempts to talk over it; other tables begin to match the volume. The volume raises and raises until it becomes near-unbearable. For about $100pp with t/t, we didn’t actually /enjoy/ our time. Really, we couldn’t wait to be out of there. In truth, had we not received a voucher to eat there from a friend, it’s unlikely we would have even placed our order.
I say this is unfair, because in that space, they have little control over the volume. Maybe the music is a remedy to help balance the noise? Perhaps they could strip the walls down and put up more padding? I don’t claim to have a solution, and I don’t envy an owner whose space turns people away, and not the food or service. It’s a brutal industry. That said, I can’t be assed to spend a premium on a dinner that we can’t enjoy.
I’m hoping in 3 months, I’ll look back and say “That goddamned hotdog, and those rollgoons were the best $35 I’ve spent in years!” But, I’m expecting it’s going to be “Damn, that place was too loud…”
From the table having a special “reserved” sign on it, to a complimentary champagne bottle, to a complimentary dessert. All the additional things they added including congratulating us multiple times really went a long way.
Now onto the food. Every single thing was amazing! We shared a bunch of appetizers because we wanted to try as much as possible.
First we had the deviled eggs which were the best deviled eggs we both have ever had! This was followed by the ribs which were so tasty! After this, we go the chips and caviar which was extremely good and the rainbow carrots which were so unique and delicious! The final plates were the fries and gnocchi max and cheese which were both amazing!
If I could rate Gass and Main above 5 stars I would. It’s truly a hidden gem in Haddonfield and I will be making this a regular stop and trying their brunch very soon!
