A Timing Nightmare and a Billing Headache—Check Your Receipts!

I usually love a good Hibachi night, but our experience at Samurai Sushi & Hibachi was a masterclass in how to lose a customer’s trust. While the large fish tank in the lobby is a nice touch for the kids, it was the only “high point” of an otherwise disappointing evening.

The pacing here was non-existent. My daughter’s sushi arrived 45 minutes before the rest of our Hibachi. By the time our hot food actually hit the table, she had been finished for nearly 30 minutes. Worse still, despite the long wait, the salmon and the vegetables were significantly overcooked and arrived cold on the 3 remaining dishes. It’s a rare feat to overcook something and still serve it chilly, but they managed it.

Our waitress walked past our table multiple times while we sat with empty plates. We waited 30 minutes before we were offered boxes or the bill. For my fellow service members: be aware they do not offer a military discount.

The most egregious part was the bill. I ordered the Salmon/Shrimp Hibachi Combo, listed on the menu for $34. Instead, I was charged $34 for the salmon meal plus a staggering $17 upcharge for the shrimp. Even if it had been entered as a side (which the menu lists as $10), the math didn’t add up. We were both charged the wrong amounts, but after waiting so long for the server to return to the table, we simply ran out of time and had to leave.

Between the erratic kitchen timing, the cold/overcooked food, and the billing errors, I cannot recommend this spot. There are too many great Hibachi places in the area to settle for being ignored and overcharged.

The service and the food were great. We did the hibachi, and the cook was very entertaining and interactive. Definitely.Go hungry because it is a ton of food. The drinks were also delicious and well priced.

Came here the other night for my sister’s birthday party. It was nice. Usually I am unable to have hibachi because of an ingredient they use but they didn’t use it here, only at the end to clean the grill, so that’s good to know for next time. The hibachi my family got looked good but I got the seafood soup and the sushi.

The seafood soup was good, I would say it was like more of a vegetable soup than a seafood soup. Most of the bowl was taken up by broccoli but there were two scallops and 1 shrimp, two fishcakes a few flakes of fake crab. The broth was yummy and the seafood was yummy. I just wish there had been more.

The crab Rangoon was really tasty. I got the Iowa Roll sushi and it was delicious!

They weren’t very busy which was nice. It’s a nice space. I hope to try to habiachi next time now that I know i can!

We ate in a both, so I can’t rate the hibachi beyond the food. It seemed like people in the hibachi room were having fun. I don’t eat sushi, but the one in our group that does gave it 8/10 stars. He said it was very good. The rest of us had hibachi and would rate it the same. Huge plates and large helpings. Hibachi and YumYum sauces were mild.

Servers and cooks are very friendly. Admittedly, service was slow but they were up front that they only had two waitresses and were busy and apologetic throughout the meal about waits, but it honestly wasn’t very bad. Went here for my birthday and they made sure to give me extra food at hibachi table and a surprise dessert. Food was awesome, recommend the amazing roll and swordfish hibachi. Great every time.

After our anniversary dinner plans fell through due to poor service at a different restaurant, we ended up here and honestly, we are so glad we did! Firstly, the atmosphere is comfortably casual but also pretty cool. They have a little bubble wall, an aquarium, and overall cool decor. Secondly, we are a couple who has had the pleasure of experiencing sushi on both coasts as well as in Hawaii. Finding quality and delicious sushi here in the midwest is an absolute treasure and we found it here at Samurai! The owners do their part in keeping it fresh and it is so SO appreciated! This was a perfect dinner for our anniversary and definitely a place we will frequent often now that it’s in our awareness.

Wife and I enjoyed the Hibachi for dinner. We ordered the NY Strip Steak and Chicken dishes (We were able to get these gluten free). The portions were perfect size and the chef was great. Absolutely 0 complaints and would come back again next time we’re in town.

We went here for my brother and cousins birthday and its was Totally worth it. The chef was funny and highly skilled. The food was fast and delicious and the little fish tank kept our son entertained towards the end.

They seemed reluctant to even seat us when we showed up then ended up with a required tip of $75… I am a generous tipper but not when it is already added to the bill. The server refilled our drinks once, and acted like he was offended when we asked for an itemized bill not just one that said the total.

We’ve been coming for over 5 years and the bill today (with less than what we usually order) was double the cost it was this time last year. Yes things are more expensive… but not that expensive. It cost $40 per person, even the kid meals.

Amazing place to eat, I highly HIGHLY recommend the Hibachi and the Sushi. I love eating here. Service is fast and friendly. The food is so delicious. Prices are pretty typical for Sushi, not cheap but not insane. Definitely my Top sushi/hibachi restaurant in Des Moines.
