My husband and I really enjoyed this restaurant. The food was excellent, our server was friendly and knowledgeable, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Will definitely be back.

We are interested in healthy food without oil. We don’t eat meat, dairy, fried food, or seafood. We asked Evan to fix us a special vegan roll, not sure if he was up to the challenge. Boy, did he impress! He made two rolls: one w slow cooked mushrooms (not pictured) and also nigiri w roasted yellow peppers (not pictured). It was outstanding! He also fixed us some tofu w scallions and a simple sauce which he and his wife enjoy at home. We also got some udon noodles and steamed vegetables which were outstanding.
It was so good we were practically licking the plates!
We heartily recommended them to our monthly WVegan Supper Club as our members are interested in heart-healthy food.
Such a lovely meal –everything was so delicious! We will definitely be back!!!

The worst sashimi deluxe I’ve ever seen no wasabi no ginger it’s supposed to have 10 pieces of sashimi I was given 6 super thin slices and 2 pieces of fried fish on rice? Along with imitation crab meat on rice? And rotten avocado. I did not order those it says 10 pieces of sashimi on their menu. Also this was $42.00 take a look at the picture.

A great restaurant in the heart of downtown Charleston which offers cocktails from the classic Old Fashion and Manhattan to the uniquely asian-inspired green tea martini. The is phenomenal and prepared by local legend, Chef Evan. From presentation to taste and texture, the sushi and sashimi are the highest quality and presented with culinary flair. Be warned that prices are above average, but understand that the restaurant uses the highest quality ingredients and the size of the restaurant limits the number of daily patrons. Our friends Julie and Keith were thoroughly impressed as well.

This is easily some of the worst food and sushi in Charleston, served by the slowest and least attentive servers, in a place that always smells like sewage and is incredibly filthy. For years I’ve been made to eat here because it’s what the group chose and for years it’s been a disappointment. Even the simple egg rolls are so greasy it will drip down your arm. I can’t really find one redeeming quality about this place. Save your money and go literally anywhere else for better food.

We ate there 3 years ago and the food, service and atmosphere were amazing. Was so excited to go again and have to say this was by far the worst food I have ever had. First, the place is dirty, disgustingly dirty, looks like it hasn’t been cleaned since we were there 3 years ago. It smells damp and everything was sticky, especially the tables. The waitress took our order and brought our food and that was it. There was no one else in the restaurant but us, which should have been an indication of how bad it is. I had to go find her to get our bill, then she disappeared again. It was 1:00 in the afternoon. The food was awful. The fish smelled like gasoline, the noodles were old tasting. My son asked if we were taking the leftovers home and I said no cause even a dog wouldn’t want it. The only thing that we ate that was decent was the gioza, and it was subpar. Even the coke was flat. I couldn’t find the waitress to complain so we left 1/2 the food untouched. I do not recommend this place at all. Spent over $100 (for 2 people) on our meal and left hungry. We will not be back. Sad cause 3 years ago this was the best sushi around and back then it was a great place to eat, clean and well staffed. I should have read the reviews before going there.

Matt and Caleb are making the sushi with love!! The sushi is beautifully crafted and don’t go in looking for cheap sushi rolls beacuse you won’t fond it here! Totally worth it!

My first visit had great service; however, overall freshness, quality, and flavor in food were lacking.

Get ready, Folks…. for a long review about a superb find of a gem of a restaurant!!! My better half and I wanted Chinese, etc. I’m from South Florida. She’s a Charlestonian. We decided to try Ichiban right on Capitol Street in the heart of Charleston’s resturant row. Oh my gosh! This was a true find. We have traveled extensively and eaten all over and tasted every kind of cuisine. This one I cannot say enough about.
First: parking….pay the $5 to park in the paid lot two blocks down. EZ peezy.
Inside we got seated right away. The ambiance is very nice with the sushi bar to the right, tables in two rooms, and a nice full bar to the left with Miss Chris as the expert mixologist.
Can I say this restaurant was world class? Not exactly….So, let’s coin a new kind of world class: “CASUAL WORLD CLASS”. It has a super relaxed atmosphere and great vibe. But, that’s ok that it didn’t have the white table cloths, etc. because it is a super comfortable dining place with the most succulent dishes. What IS offered is truly the most delicious food and drinks, along with superior service, in a nice casual atmosphere. Isn’t that why we go to the best restaurants?
The bartender, Chris, made the most wonderful cocktails just the way they should be made. The Mrs.: a Bloody Mary, me: Dirty Martini. Both spot- on delicious and made correctly.
Next, an appetizer of Shumai made with crab. It came with 8 pieces, not 5 like other establishments. Very delicious including the dipping sauce!
For an entre’ she had Chicken Teriyaki with steamed vegetables, along with fried rice made in the true fashion way, not dry or tasteless like most places. I had sushi rolls: Ichiban Maki (now one of my all time favorites!), a Rainbow roll, and a Futo Maki. These rolls were absolutely, by far the freshest and best tasting!. Kudos to Eric the sushi chef! Kaitlyn, our waitress was attentive and so pleasant. I could see the other wait staff just as attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. All patrons seemed relaxed and enjoying themselves in this casual atmosphere. Even Ross, the manager came over later, said hello, and checked on our meal and service. Isn’t this all the way it’s supposed to be? YES!
To sum it up….right here in Charleston, WV, there is a top flight, very enjoyable restaurant that you don’t want to miss. Or, stop in just for a cocktail made by Miss Chris. You’ll see why she wins the bartender of the year contest in Charleston. Either way, you will love and enjoy Ichiban. We can’t wait to go back and enjoy more choices from their varied menu. You must try this gem!
(Sorry, I forgot photos of the food before we started eating it!)
