Had a wonderful dining experience at Thanjai Mess that truly celebrated traditional flavors. We started with Nattu Kozhi Saaru, which was rich, aromatic, and comforting—perfect as a starter soup. The appetizers were spot on: Shrimp 65 was crispy and well-spiced, Chicken Lollipop was juicy with great masala coating, and the Nethili Fry was fresh, crunchy, and packed with coastal flavors.
The Ambur Chicken Biryani was fragrant, flavorful, and cooked to perfection, while the Mutton Biryani stood out with tender meat and deep, authentic taste. Portions were generous, and everything tasted fresh and homely.
Great food, authentic Tamil Nadu flavors, and a satisfying overall experience. Definitely coming back—highly recommended for anyone craving real South Indian non-veg cuisine!

I don’t know what to rate for the food because I was hungry and wanted to try something new restaurant and visited here. But the food was completely completely tamilian style.

We ordered chicken, dal tadka, pongal and parota. To be frank, I am picky for I didn’t like Tamilian food, not to be regionist, but I was unable to eat them much. But the pongal I ate completely, I don’t lnow if it their coconut pil or style of cooking or what but it was first time tryinv tamilian food..

But my husband really enjoyed, he said the chicken curry was so nice just like homemade nice and thick gravy. And also the server told me that the parata are homemade and freshly made. Nice about it.

Overall, this is not my review but my husband’s. He loved the food

We recently visited for Sunday breakfast. Unfortunately, the idly was very hard, and it didn’t taste like it was made from fresh batter. The dosa had a similar issue .it seemed like the items were pre-made, refrigerated, and reheated before serving.Poori was good and again potato side was like made on the previous day .
On a positive note, the service and atmosphere were excellent.
I hope the restaurant can give breakfast the same attention to quality as lunch. Otherwise, it might be better to focus solely on lunch and maintain the high standards there.

Thanjai Mess in New Jersey is a real gem if you’re into authentic South Indian food. The place keeps things simple — no fancy setup, just delicious, homestyle meals that taste straight out of Tamil Nadu. The food is fresh, flavorful, and super satisfying. The dosas are crisp and golden, the idlis are soft and fluffy, and the sambar hits that perfect tangy note. It feels like you’re eating in someone’s home kitchen rather than a restaurant.

Portions are generous and prices are really fair for the quality you get. The thali meals are a must-try — great variety, with enough spice and comfort to keep you coming back. Service is friendly and quick, and even when it’s busy, the staff handle everything with a smile. Parking is easy and the vibe stays casual, which makes it great for both quick lunch stops and weekend family meals. Thanjai Mess is easily one of my favorite spots for a true South Indian fix in NJ.

Visited this restaurant for their Onam special. I am so excited on the tasty side of the food. It was definitely southern Indian delight. So amazed on their unlimited veg+non-veg deal for Onam(Harvest festival of Kerala, a southern Indian state). They provided,, porotta+chicken curry, Rice+Fish Curry+Shrimp curry, Chicken fry, Fish Fry, Payasam/Gheer(Kerala style) and many other Side dishes. Totally enjoyed the food. Couldn’t order more as it was so filling. Noticed many families enjoying the same. This restaurant is fairly new and I would recommend anybody who love south Indian food, this is the place to go. Very Authentic and friendly people as well. Wish them success. One suggesiton I have is improve the ambience and seperate the Wash area.

I placed a catering order for December 13, 2025, which included 1 Large Deep Kalyana Mutton Biryani and 1 Large Deep Kalyana Chicken Biryani.

Overall, the quality and taste were good. A little more masala would have made both biryanis even better, but they were enjoyable.

However, the mutton biryani was very disappointing in terms of meat quantity. The large deep tray seemed to be mostly rice, with very few mutton pieces. It was nowhere near sufficient for the 27 people it is advertised to serve, and not even enough for 20 people. By the end, we were left with almost a quarter tray of rice but hardly any mutton.

Given that this is a catering order in the US, customers reasonably expect a sufficient and balanced quantity of meat, especially considering the price. Unfortunately, the meat portion felt more like what one might experience in India—very minimal—which was disappointing.

I hope the management looks into this and ensures better meat-to-rice balance in their catering trays going forward

I am from the UK and recently visited my friends in New Jersey. Some other friends joined us from Dubai, and we all met after a long time. We wanted to eat Indian food, and someone recommended a place to us. Initially, we were a bit hesitant about the ambiance of the restaurant since it had just opened.

However, the food was amazing! We ordered a variety of dishes, and everything was top-class. The customer service was excellent. You must try the fish fry and fish curry with paratha. We also had mutton shank with biryani, and their lamb soup with extra pepper is a must-try as well. I hope to visit this place again next time. No regrets, it was worth the money.

I ordered the Kalyana Chicken Biriyani, Poori Masala, and Nool Parotta, and everything was absolutely delicious! My mom and I enjoyed every bite, and the flavors were authentic and comforting. My little niece especially savored the nool parotta — she loved it so much!

I will definitely be ordering from them again, and I truly hope they continue to maintain this wonderful standard of quality. Highly recommended!

Worst experience. Do not recommend.

Today, we went to Thanjai Mess in North Brunswick for the first time. We chose to dine in this restaurant based on all the positive reviews it has received.
When we entered, we were immediately given a table. And we sat there for 45 minutes because no one came to take our order even when we approached them several times. There was no consideration of the time we entered and waited, since they randomly took orders from other people.
The person who came to take the order did not even want to listen to our concern about how long we had been waiting without being able to order.
Finally, after we got to order our food, we didn’t have any idea when the food would be served. He just said ‘5 more minutes’ and ’10 more minutes’. Parallelly, we heard other tables saying that they had to eat their food without the side dish because it took too long to be served. The guy just took it lightheartedly as if it was not a concern.
So, we waited for a long time, and yet didn’t get the food. And we canceled the order and left this place.

If they are not able to handle all of the customers, they should have informed that the moment we entered the restaurant. They should have mentioned that it would take time, so people can plan accordingly. They simply want to keep the customer in the restaurant without serving the food on time.

Will never go to this place ever again. Would never recommend. Based on what we noticed today, this issue probably happens frequently in this restaurant. The other reviews for this place did not give us the correct picture.

I hope that after seeing this review, the management will take an action to improve their service, if they take it seriously.

We visited this place yesterday for first time and liked it very much. All dishes were very authentic and to our taste nothing was oily. We tried Dosa and couple chicken dishes and we topped it up by filter coffee. And we loved it, the server Yashaswini – was very helpful. So in summary in both food and service this place is super!! We will definitely pay them another visit
