The best sandwich place in Des Moines. The bread alone is worthy of a visit to this place and add to that some fresh ingredients and awesome service and you have a perfect sandwich place.
Their potato salad is also super unique and I loved it.

Simply the Best Sandwiches in Des Moines. Highly recommend. Everything on the menu is good. Just completed a nice remodel, more open than it used to be.

A friend introduced me to South Union years ago and I was delighted by the quality of the food and the experience. The ingredients are fresh and the bread is awesome.
The cafe is only open for lunch so it is way more convenient to eat here if you work downtown.
Parking is either metered on the street or other paid parking.
The atmosphere is interesting since the building is so old. It can get a little loud when they get busy.
You do need to enter through the temple entrance instead of the street now. This is so the line to order can remain inside.
Sandwiches are made to order and may take a while to make. They call the number on your receipt when it is ready.
Coke is the fountain drink available.

I have always liked their salad bar and sandwiches since over 10 years nowbbut my recent customer service experience was bad 🙁

I ordered a sandwich and a customer rep asked me if I would like any bread , I said “sure”.
After I paid and took my receipt.. the rep still did not give me any bread so I asked for bread. He kept looking through bread packets that contains just 1 piece and got a smallest piece saying its free anyway.
I didn’t buy a $11 sandwich for that free bread. Please educate your employees on how to talk with people who’s giving business.

I have been going to South Union since it was by the YWCA (when we would eat bread scraps by the bag full). Favorite spot, always bring people here who are visiting, make a point to have lunch every time I’m down town. BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BREAD?! The last couple of times I’ve been I’ve assumed it was an off day or there was an issue with the bake, but it seems that the beautiful, pillowy, soft garlic focaccia is now flat, dry and minimally garlicky. I know the bread still exists (I just go get it at Gateway now), but I can’t believe that they switched the recipe or whatever they did. The meat/cheese is still great quality, but the bread is a total miss and makes it hard to consider it as a lunch option any more. Just be warned this is not the South Union so many of us knew and loved 🙁

Traveling to all 50 states and stopped in this South Union Bread Cafe for lunch since it had such positive reviews! The Sarah’s Revenge sandwich was the best sandwich I’ve ever had! I’m glad she got mad at whomever or whatever! That was a damn good Sammie! And the pepper jack soup was amazing! If I was ever in prison on DR, I’d request that sandwich as my last meal!!!!! Sad I don’t live closer to eat here again!

The Cali Club was fantastic. Visited from out of town, and will be dreaming about that sandwich until I can visit again. Staff was also friendly and service was quick. But that sandwich was life altering.

Often imitated, but never duplicated. South Union is the original ciabatta bread sandwich shop.

I have been coming here for years and you can always count on the quality of the sandwich. I usually visit here about once or twice a month, but for about a year my office was just a couple of blocks away, so I was visiting once or twice a week. I slowly made my way through most of the menu, but hands down my favorite is still Sarah’s revenge.

This place gets busy quick, so you want to go before noon if you can. Even though dining area is spacious it fills up quickly.
