Long-time friends Bill Opre and John Kallabat raised a glass to new beginnings in August 2022, when their new restaurant and bar, The Canopy Lounge, opened in downtown Brighton. The duo transformed an old auto parts store into a stunning rustic, lounge-style barand small-plates eatery. Alongside experienced chef, Andy Sheets, long time local owner of CC Catering, the men have cooked up one-of-a-kind gourmet meals and high-end cocktails that can’t be found anywhere else in Livingston County.

What a hidden gem! Out of the way and attached to a liquor store, I was pleasantly surprised to find the atmosphere warm and “comfortably classy”, and live music added to the vibe. Solan took such great care of us, A+ customer service!!
Starting with a cocktail from the fall menu, I absolutely loved my Reese’s Old Fashioned! Every dish we tried was delicious. The pan seared walleye was served over gnocchi in a lemon dill sauce – probably the walleye we have ever had, and the gnocchi was fantastic. The center cut blue cheese steak was cooked perfectly, the blue cheese paired so well with the candied bacon. All of desserts were great – crème brûlée, caramel mascarpone cheesecake, and the tiramisu dip – yummy!

The original Canopy was a Brighton institution for decades while the new Canopy combines a touch of the old classics with the very best of the new. We went for happy hour (fantastic food for a bargain price) and loved the people, the place, the food and the music. Feels like home.

Yesterday I came here with my family and had a nice early dinner to beat the rush. I irresponsibly left my purse hanging on the back of my chair. Today I went back for it because the staff kept it safe for me and all of the contents were left in it including my cash. Honesty is hard to come by these days and I greatly appreciate the staff for being so wonderful seriously from the bottom of my heart thank you!!! Also the truffle fries were amazing and my kids split the large mac & cheese plate and they loved it. We will be back soon 🙂

Every time I visit, I’m impressed by how welcoming and relaxed the atmosphere is. It’s the kind of place you can settle into and actually enjoy your time.
What truly sets this place apart, though, is the owner and manager. They are genuinely some of the best people around—friendly, attentive, and passionate about what they do. The Canopy Lounge is absolutely top notch! I was in search of a venue to host my daughter’s First Holy Communion party for approx. 30 guests, without breaking the bank. Someone on the Brighton MI Happenings FB page suggested The Canopy so I checked it out. The minute I walked in was impressed by the modern rustic, yet vintage vibe this quaint restaurant has, and I was surprised by how big it actually is inside. Right away, I was greeted by co-owner, Bill Opre who gave me a tour, and showed me the new event space they added to the building a few months ago. It was perfect, so I booked it. Bill connected me with his GM, Charles Duty who took over from there. Charles was wonderful to work with. He went over all of the event package menu options, helped me with my selections, set up and all the final touches. Everything was first class! The food was amazing – we went buffet style with chicken lemon piccata, pork tenderloin, mashed potatoes, mostaccioli, steamed broccoli, garden salad and rolls – and all of our guests raved over the food. I love how the event space has a separate area for the buffet that has sliding barn doors that open when food is ready. Our servers – Holly and John were incredible – friendly and personable, attentive and very professional. Most importantly, everyone had a great time and it was a memorable event thank to The Canopy! They are a hidden gem, but not for long. I give them 5++++ stars, and highly recommend!

It was our first time and we had an amazing experience! The gentleman hostess was as sweet as can be, our waiter made us feel at home and top tier, he knew the menu line the back of his hand. I got the duck but instead of rice I got mash potatoes and everything was so delicious. My fiancé got the steak with crumble blue cheese on top and he was very satisfied with every bite. Our experience was top notch and we can’t wait to come back!

Canopy Lounge is hands-down one of Brighton’s best-kept gems. The food is incredible every single time—full of flavor and always served hot and fresh. Whether you’re stopping in for a casual bite or staying awhile, the vibe is perfect: comfortable, laid-back, and welcoming without ever feeling crowded or rushed.
The owner and manager deserve a special shoutout. Their positivity and kindness truly set the tone for the entire place. You can tell they care deeply about their customers and the experience they’re creating. That level of hospitality is rare these days, and it keeps me coming back again and again.

Canopy Lounge was the perfect location for my sons family graduation dinner. We had around 27 people and reserved the private room in the back. The space was perfect size, tables set up and ready to do centerpieces. Plenty of room to do photo backdrop and set up special graduation pieces. The food was amazing!! Absolutely delicious!! We chose to have buffett style and was able to pick great choices out of the options. Service was very attentive and accomdating to whatever we needed. Server Steve and manager Charles were so sweet and helpful when planning as well as the night of! Canopy Lounge is a hidden treasure in Brighton!! We go often for date night dinner and I will suggest to anyone that needs a private room for an event it is perfect or for a great meal any time!!! Thank you again for being part of our sons Graduation memories!!
