Sushi Umi is one of those places that rather restores one’s faith in neighbourhood Japanese dining.
The food is genuinely delicious, the service warm without being theatrical, and the pricing refreshingly sensible for Vancouver. One doesn’t leave feeling ambushed by the bill, which is increasingly rare.
The Hamachi kama deserves a proper mention. Many sushi restaurants simply deliver the collar and consider the matter closed. Here, it arrives generously sized and accompanied by a small salad, which feels thoughtful rather than perfunctory. The portion itself is substantial, beautifully grilled, and deeply satisfying in that quietly indulgent way good fish can be.
The beef donburi is equally commendable. Well seasoned, generous in portion, and entirely reasonable in price. It is the sort of bowl one orders intending to share and then quietly decides against.
It is hardly surprising the reviews are so high. A dependable, well run establishment that understands value and consistency. Quite happily recommended.

Stopped in on a dinner date and was INCREDIBLY impressed from how amazing the service was here! We were sat instantly and provided some very delicious tea to start which was some of the best I’ve had at a sushi restaurant.
Our servers were kind, respectful and very attentive. He provided us with recommendations and I’m glad we took them!
We had the sashimi and sushi combo to start and O.M.G…. the sashimi was exquisite ✨️ super fresh and the tuna and salmon were some of the best I’ve ever had! What a treat!!! The dragon roll was the ABSOLUTE BEST I’ve ever had. My date had the volcano roll which the display of fire and delicious spicy taste was out of this world!
Hands down this is one of the best sushi restaurants I’ve ever ever been blessed to find and dine at!

I found this place in the southgranville IG, I was surprised I didn’t know about this japanese restaurant even though I live in the neighborhood 6 years ago. I am glad it was a great discover. Went with my husband for lunch, we didn’t have to wait as there was plenty of availability. We tried bento boxes which had a 15% discount promotion, I loved the beef teriyaki as you could feel the flavor of a very well done stir-fried meat, I also liked the shrimp and veggies panko fried, the products were fresh and the fry was well done (crispy, dry and nothing greasy). In general the products used seem to be fresh and with good quality, plus the great seasoning made it stunning. We ordered the bacio caramel for dessert and we loved it. Regularly japanese restaurants do not offer this type of desserts (very sweet), it was remarkable they thought not just in the oriental but the occidental client’s taste, extra point for this. Complimentary tea was a nice treat as well. I will definitely go back to try other items from their extensive menu, next time more rolls for sure.

The sushi rice was pretty disappointing, which brought the overall experience down. The fish slices itself was good, but the real standout was our server, Nick. He genuinely cared and went out of his way to make sure we had an amazing experience, you can’t train that kind of heart. Unfortunately, for the price point, the sushi still lands below mid-pack for me. I’d come back to give it another try, especially when they have their quartet bluefin tuna sushi deal.

One of the best spots in Vancouver for sure. The portions are generous and the quality totally matches the price so it feels really worth it.
The rolls and tempura were amazing probably some of the best I’ve had in Vancouver.
Your impression might change depending on your taste so asking the staff for recommendations or hearing a bit more about the dishes can be a good idea.

This might become my favorite restaurant! Everyone was so kind, and the interior design was beautiful and spotless. Both the rolls and sushi were delicious and came in generous portions — two of us ordered three rolls and five pieces of nigiri, and we were so full that we took the leftovers home. Everything was fresh and tasty, so I’ll definitely come back here whenever I crave rolls or sushi again.
My recommendations are the salmon belly nigiri and Tom’s Roll!

The sushi pieces were huge, very flavorful, and fairly priced. We each ordered just one roll, but we were full afterward. The service was fast, even on a busy Saturday night. We’ll definitely be back to try more.

To begin with, the interior is really nicely laid out with cozy atmosphere.
Plus, the server was gentle and humorous. I enjoyed his vibe so much.
I was having roll craving so i ordered a few rolls, a few pieces of nigiri.
Balance , balance , balance! The rolls were amazingly balanced with tastes on point. Nigiri’s were with thick fish cuts, which i liked, and it was well balanced too. In high end sushi places, they dont give you such thick cuts for the balance, but this restaurant handled anyhow!
I forgot to take a photo of salmon belly nigiri which was the highlight of the night. This was a thing from different universe. I loved it so much.
This place has become my go-to place for sushi. See you again!

I have had a lot of great sushi over the decades. This is one of very few 5-star for food quality, variety of flavours, and presentation. Good sized portions too. Good price. 5 star all around! (Photo was after we devoured most of it!). We liked Jay’s roll and the Awesome roll the best! Rachel’s mango is really good too, with huge mango chunks. Yum!
