High Point lost an underrated sleeper hit of a Mexican restaurant when Crazy Mexico decamped for Greensboro. Thankfully, the location didn’t remain empty for long. Habanero is still new – they don’t have their liquor license yet – but early indications suggest that they are a more than worthy successor.

As with the previous tenant, the nondescript shopping plaza location is bigger than it looks from the outside. My wife and I arrived on a Saturday night and had no problem finding a table. Staff were friendly and welcoming, and service here was excellent: attentive servers and a surprisingly fast kitchen.

Habanero boasts a large menu boasting everything you’d expect to find and then some: tacos, burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, chimichangas, and more. We were in the mood for something different, so we started with an order of pepinos (cucumbers with salt, lime, and chili powder) to go with a steak quesadilla and a tropical (chicken, bacon, shrimp, pineapple, red and yellow peppers).

Nearly everything was tasty. The cucumbers were refreshing, the meat in the quesadilla was tender, and the shrimp were flavorful (and paired well with the pineapple). About the worst that can be said is that the salsa (smooth and oddly sweet) was unimpressive, but that’s a relatively small bone to pick.

High Point does not lack for Mexican options, and Habanero may not displace an existing favorite. But much like its predecessor in this location, it has the potential to be one of the city’s IYKYK spots: unheralded, reliable, and worthy of wider exposure.

Absolutely wonderful food.
We literally almost filled up on the chips because they were so good. If you like hot stuff, try the hot salsa platter. Banging!

The service was fast and so friendly. The menu is extensive and you can find something for anyone. I’m going to try to not eat here everyday.

Delicious chips! Hot sauces were fantastic. Regular salsa was just ok- kind of like tomato sauce and not chunky at all. Quesabirria tacos were amazing and the lunch special El Agave (mini chicken & mini beef burrito w/rice) was also really good. So many choices, we’ll have to keep coming back. No liquor license yet as of Dec. 27 but that’s ok- for now

OMG so good! I love this place. My first experience with this restaurant was welcoming, friendly service and amazingly good food! The quesabarria tacos were the best! Will definitely come back and I highly recommend you try it!

Clean, comfortable restaurant with attentive and caring service. Loved that they bring 4 types of salsa to the table. Generous portions. I got the Special de la Casa which is two burritos stuffed with delicious beef tips. Yummy! Prices very reasonable too.

When they brought out the hot sauce plate, it was like they knew the way to my heart! I had a vegetarian fajita, well balanced, perfectly cooked, well seasoned. The beef chimichanga was hot fresh and delicious.

First off the chips and salsa are so good. The chips come out crispy and warm. They offered us some spicier salsas as well. The service was quick and friendly and everyone loved their order. They have a large menu with lots of options and nothing too expensive.

First-time visit today and, despite being initially concerned by how empty it was, we were blown away! The service was excellent, and the food tastes truly homemade. We had the Camarones Yucatecos with agua de Jamaica and the Los Jimadores Special with agua de melon. Both were delicious, served in generous portions, and reasonably priced. A true hidden gem—don’t let an empty dining room fool you!
