I arrived at about 10:05 am on 1-20-2026. I rarely go downtown anymore so when a do a full sized Richman Poboy is what I order.
The sandwich comes out doubled wrapped. You can feel the warmth and smell the olive salad right away. Unwrapping the Butcher paper, you are hit with the mustard and olive salad smell…….a one, two punch. Unwrapping the inner layer, you get “it all”. Meat, mustard and olive salad aroma just smacks you in the face. Gooey cheese, soft bread, and the perfect combo of ingredients for the best sandwich in Birmingham, in my opinion.

For over 30 years, the Richman sandwich from Ranelli’s is unique and can’t be beat. The olive salad mix and fresh bread are delicious. It’s very small inside but there is also seating on an outdoor patio.

I have been eating here for over thirty years and having the all you can eat lasagna that is phenomenal on Thursdays or the Richman sub that has olive salad on it that just makes the sandwich if you like olives, it is great! I do enjoy eating here on the patio. They have had an older patio but just renovated the patio and it has a roof and it’s larger. It makes a very nice spot to eat lunch and enjoy the afternoon.

The Richman was one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in a LONG time! Loaded with meat and cheese, and the olive salad was perfect–gave it just the right amount of kick. I will definitely come back next time I’m in Birmingham!!!

Mom and pop shops deserve all our support and Ranellis is the best sandwhich spot for exactly that.
Genuinely the most delicious sandwhich I have had in a long time and I’m ashamed I’m just now finding this place. Wrapped in butcher paper and nestled in a brown bag like the old days.
If you are from Birmingham you are required to go now, if you’re not you too are required to if you visit.
When I walked in and sat down I felt like I was back home, I got a hard reminder of what’s important and special. So please from a diehard foodie.
No fine dining and recreate these meals.

Boy o boy….I’m mad at myself for not stopping here before today. I had the best sub ever!!! When we walked in I was amazed by all the music items and posters that were on the wall it was beautiful.
I had the 16in…yes 16in Richman sub which came with fresh Italian bread and stuffed woth Ham, Corned Beef, Peppered Beef, Genoa Salami, Pastrami, Swiss, Provolone, Mustard, and Topped with Ranelli’s Olive Salad…it was AMAZING and baby that bread make you wanna slap yo mama (sorry mom)!! I will be back Tuesday for SPAGHETTI DAY!! Heck I may go back tomorrow to try the pizza…either way Ranelli’s you have 2 new family members so get ready 😉
