Bangkok Kitchen Thai: Authentic Thai Cuisine in Edmonton

The Tom Yum soup was a disappointment from the start. A proper Tom Yum should carry the fragrance of lemongrass and include straw mushrooms, but those essential ingredients were completely missing. Shrimp is offered only as an “option,” which dilutes the authenticity even further.
The mango salad was unbalanced and overly sweet, with a watery texture that lacked the crisp, refreshing bite you’d expect. The so-called Thai calamari barely resembled anything Thai at all—it was more like onion rings you’d find at a fast-food chain like Burger King.
Pad Thai, which should be the hallmark of any Thai restaurant, missed the mark entirely. The noodles lacked the crunch of fresh bean sprouts and spring onions, while the pork was overcooked and flavorless. The green curry was another letdown: thin and soupy, with none of the key Thai ingredients such as Thai eggplant, which are expected for proper depth and texture.
What truly sealed my impression was the menu itself. Fried dumplings and spring rolls are standard in pan-Asian or chop suey-style spots, but they don’t belong on a menu that claims to be authentically Thai.
Overall, Bangkok Garden feels less like a Thai restaurant and more like a generic Asian eatery catering to Western expectations. If Edmonton diners think this represents Thai food, it may just reflect how difficult it is for authentic Thai restaurants to survive here.
We had a great experience at Bangkok Kitchen. It was surprisingly quiet for a Friday night, but it was clear a lot of business comes from takeout — we saw several people picking up orders, with only a couple of Skip the Dishes deliveries.
We were seated quickly, and once we ordered, everything came out piping hot and super fresh. The standout dish was definitely the coconut shrimp appetizer — crispy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. We also tried the green curry and the peanut cashew chicken. Both were simple in presentation but used solid, quality ingredients. The sauces on both mains were straightforward and lacked complexity, but still satisfying. I ordered some chili oil on the side, but all that added was heat.
We sampled three types of rice: sticky, plain, and coconut — all were well-cooked and very reasonably priced. Other nice touches, dishes and cutlery are of quality as are the to-go containers, little things like this add up.
The restaurant is spotless, and it’s clear the they iare working hard to earn their success — it really shows. Highly recommend.
We tried the Panang and Green curries and both were soupy and oily. The flavor and heat is there and the vegetables and meat are cooked well, but the visual of the oil floating on the top makes it completely unappealing. Also, the vegetables hadn’t picked up any of the curry flavor so it was like they were just thrown in with the “soup” – no infusion of flavor whatsoever.
Papaya salad is uninspiring and the flavor is pretty much absent.
The take-out containers are the worst. 2 out of 4 of our items leaked all over the place. The containers were a cheap foil bottom with the thinnest plastic lid I’ve ever seen and the whole thing is wrapped in plastic wrap. I can’t believe how cheap the food packaging was considering these are $16-$20 items.
I called the restaurant to tell them we didn’t like the food and I got the “there’s nothing we can do about it”.
I won’t be back and I’m trying to do a public service here as I have been ripped off.
Papaya salad is very hot and spicy but tastes well. We just prefer the Pad thai to be a bit drier. Great Pe-nang curry.
