The chicken curry was a little two salty and not sweet enough. The steak was well cooked and tender but too citrus.
However,
The one thing that stood out the most was the perfect service form all aspects, everyone was smiling, caring and happpy.
Eat there!
Food-wise, we split the tea leaf salad, hawker garlic noodles with shrimp, and Inle fisherman. My favorite had to be the tea leaf salad, a Burmese classic and just such a wonderful symphony of flavors and textures. I love the crunch from the sesame, sunflower seeds, garlic chips, and chickpeas (as well as, if we got them, the peanuts) paired with the freshness of the lettuce and cabbage, plus the slightly pungent / funky, super umami flavor from the shrimp powder and fermented tea leaves. I absolutely love this dish every time I get it, and it’s a must-try at any Burma Love family location if you haven’t had it before. They also mix it for you and explain each ingredient table-side, so it has a fun presentation.
For our mains, both the garlic noodles and fisherman were quite tasty! The garlic noodles were super flavorful — certainly very garlicky but also a great hit of umami and salt from the soy sauce — and the shrimp was sweet, juicy, and tender. The noodles to err a bit on the greasy side, so I think they’re a great item to split but I would personally feel a little heavy / uncomfortable if that was all I had. The sliced cucumbers on top were a lovely pop of freshness to balance out the grease, though. I think if I had saved some of the tea leaf salad to eat alongside the noodles then that would’ve been perfect. I also really enjoyed the Inle fisherman; the cod was very flakey and tender (although certainly on the fishier side, if you’re less comfortable with strong fish flavor), and it had a great flavor from the slightly sweet, sour, salty, and spicy sauce and roasted heirloom tomatoes. The fish was paired with a wedge of cabbage, which might have been one of my favorite things that night. The cabbage was very tender but still had a good level of crunch, and it was topped with a delightfully umami, not too spicy chili crisp.
All in all, such a wonderful spot for dinner! I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Teakwood and cannot wait to come back!
Decor and ambiance were really nice. The food was well portioned. The milk tea was very sweet and tasted a bit like ice cream. The keema platha was an excellent appetizer to share amongst four. We especially liked the dipping sauce. I preferred the noodles over the duck curry, surprisingly.
Cons: I felt the curry was a bit too much, as in the first few spoonfuls were delicious but after a while I could not finish it. Another friend got the chicken curry and similarly, she took most of it to go since it felt too heavy for lunch. Our waiter was friendly, but we reminded them to refill our water many times. Maybe a bigger pitcher for the table was necessary haha
Overall, I enjoyed Teakwood. I prefer it to Burma Love but Burma Superstar is still my favorite of the sister restaurants.
The food was flavorful and creatively prepared, just as I remembered. The restaurant itself has a modern, calming atmosphere—comfortable seating, beautiful colors, and thoughtful design accents that really add to the experience.
The cod noodles were delicious, though the portion of cod was surprisingly small. The duck, while generously portioned and nicely seasoned, unfortunately wasn’t cooked through. It was tough to chew, and when we cut into it with a steak knife, parts of the meat appeared raw, with visible ligaments and uncooked flesh.
Matt, our server, was extremely understanding and apologetic. He promptly removed the duck from the bill and even offered a complimentary drink as a gesture of goodwill. I truly believe this was an isolated incident, and we appreciated how it was handled. Thanks to Matt’s professionalism and kindness, we’ll definitely be returning in the future.
60% or more of the menu is gluten free. Very well marked for all dietary restrictions and waiter was super knowledgeable of allergens.
I would recommend that you make reservations before coming. if not, then they will accommodate, but you are on a time limit of when they will need the table. Our timeline was 55 minutes which we agreed. However, I would suggest that the waiter staff not start cleaning your table without asking you first. I had planned on taking home my leftovers but the waiter staff came and just remove our plates without asking if we were finished or wanted to take home the leftovers. The management was gracious and replaced the food that had been removed…thank you!!!
