Unfortunately, the service was genuinely awful and completely overshadowed the experience.
From the start, we felt like an inconvenience. It took over 30 minutes for anyone to come take our order. When a server finally did, their attitude was dismissive and strange. There was even a comment made that implied surprise that we wanted to order food at all, which was uncomfortable and confusing in a restaurant of this caliber.
Throughout the night, we were handled by three different servers, all of whom were rude, unaccommodating, and rarely checked on us.
There was no warmth, no attentiveness, and no sense that we were welcome.
When the food came out, we noticed that two items from our order never arrived. We asked if everything had come out, and we were told yes.
We then clarified that we were certain two items were missing. At that point, the response was, “Do you still want them?” By then, we had finished eating and said no, since we were wrapping up our date.
Later, while we were still sitting and talking, we decided we would take one of the missing items after all, the skirt steak. When it arrived, it was ice cold. It was obvious that the dish had been prepared earlier, charged to our bill, never delivered, and then served to us much later after sitting. While the item was eventually comped, serving cold food due to a service failure is unacceptable.
What made this experience worse was the consistent attitude from the staff. Two female servers with dark brown/black hair and a male server with glasses were all noticeably curt and unpleasant. Every person at our table noticed it. It felt like we were unwanted, despite ordering generously and being polite throughout the night.
This place felt dismissive and disorganized. Good food cannot compensate for service that makes guests feel uncomfortable and disregarded. We left a measly tip to signal our displeasure but I didn’t think they deserved a tip at all.
We wanted to love this place. Instead, we left disappointed and frustrated.
Food was just fine, especially for Portland. The tempura and karaage were great and everything else somewhat forgettable. The black cod was the winner of the 3 entrees at the table. The ribeye, ordered medium, was well done and the salmon was meh. Maybe if you come for omakase it is better. Don’t feel the need to return but wouldn’t completely veto if someone else asked.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about Tabiki, so maybe tonight was just bad luck. We started with sashimi, unagi rolls, and shrimp tempura. The tempura was actually amazing — one of the best I’ve had. The sashimi was fine, and the sushi was forgettable.
Then the disaster began. The black cod came out completely burnt — it looked more like charcoal than fish. I can’t believe they even brought that to the table. The ribeye, which I asked for medium rare, was a total miss. The fatty parts were undercooked, while the outside tasted like burnt charcoal and old oil. They really redefined what “medium rare” means.
Our server was nice and offered a complimentary dessert and cod, but the experience was already ruined.
Also, parking is very limited, so plan ahead.
Honestly, for the same price, I’d rather go somewhere that serves real omakase.
The overall atmosphere was great — good music, cool energy, and definitely a spot worth checking out. Our server, Bryan, was awesome — attentive, friendly, and really made the evening special.
Only small note: the restrooms could use some reed diffusers to freshen up the space. Other than that, everything was excellent. Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for great sushi and a memorable night out.
The highlight of the Omakase was an unexpected one: the “ramen.” To be honest, I was a bit skeptical when I saw it on the menu, but it turned out to be an incredible dish—more akin to a refined, cold soba experience—that truly impressed both me and my companion (who is not Japanese). It was so good that it convinced us to return for a second meal.
The service is nearly flawless. The staff was incredibly accommodating, even preparing a dish from the Omakase course that wasn’t on the à la carte menu upon our request.
If there is one area for improvement, it would be the beverage pairing for the Omakase. While the food was excellent, I felt the quality and the portion size of the pairings could have been a bit more ambitious to match the standard of the cuisine.
I also missed out on their lunch-exclusive ramen due to timing, which is definitely on my list for next time. Takibi offers a level of satisfaction that goes well beyond any star rating; it’s a place that genuinely cares about the guest experience. Highly recommended.
