Reviews
The rabbit empanadillas were incredible with a baked flaky crust and juicy rabbit with some stock on the side for dipping.
The mini piononos were perfect – a divine balance of savory and sweet.
The corn and cheese balls were yummy with the guava sauce.
I had the mofongo twice – once with the shrimps al ajillo and once with the bisteca – both were great, I liked the shrimp more because they served the sauce on the side which I loved.
Topped it all off with the flan de queso and the texture was like if flan had a baby with a Basque cheesecake and the caramelized sugar that had a lingering bittersweetness – perfection.
Also – DO NOT pass on their homemade hot sauce which was a perfect blend of hotness and flavor!
(Only thing I wish is that the food was served a little hotter temperature wise, but that’s it!)
Lovely little restaurant. For appetizer, we had the Mahi Mahi bites as an appetizer with tartar sauce (AMAZING, fresh, crispy). My dad had the steak and rice/beans (so soft and delicious), I had the salmon with cilantro rice (salmon cooked perfectly but the rice was a tiny bit normal, nothing to write home about). I also had the cucumber lemonade which was VERY SOUR, which I absolutely LOVED! I love love love sour, but a kid probably would hate this. Not much sugar in it at all and obviously made with fresh squeezed lemon and mashed cucumber. I’m obsessed with this non-alcoholic drink 🙂
Overall the service was kind and friendly but they were very busy.
I mention first that you really need a reservation but we actually got lucky and got a no-show reservation table for two. We got sat right by the entry and I kid you not there were no fewer than 15 different parties of people trying to get seated and were turned away while we ate. It’s a very very popular place! And for good reason.
We started with the sorullito corn fritters, golden and stuffed with cheese, laid over a sweet guava sauce that made every bite pop. Then came the mahi mahi bites, tender, juicy, resting on tartar sauce, and disappearing way too fast. The side salad—a vibrant mix topped with grana padano and raspberry vinaigrette—was so fresh it felt unfair to every other salad I’ve ever had.
Our mains? Asopao de gandules con jamón with tostones and yuca frita, a bowl of balance—rich, flavorful, but never overwhelming. And then came the showstopper: BBQ ribs so tender they collapsed at the touch of my fork. I’m extremely picky with ribs—fatty cuts, dryness, lack of flavor—but these? Perfectly cooked, no waste, just clean bones left behind and zero regrets. The mamposteao de gandules on the side was delicately crafted with each grain holding its own—pure artistry. And don’t get me started on the rum and guava spicy BBQ sauce—a literal spoonful of heaven.
The service? Impeccable. The drinks? Dangerously delicious.
This is a restaurant that doesn’t just serve food—it delivers an experience that will follow you long after you leave the island.
To anyone visiting Rincón: do not skip El Despecho. Just know that once you taste these flavors, you’ll never want to leave Puerto Rico again.
The food was horrible. I can’t remember the last time I ate at a restaurant that served actively lousy food. It wasn’t a case of being mediocre. It was just wrong and terrible.
Starters: The dough of the rabbit empanadas was so tough, I had to let it sit in a cup of sauce for a few minutes before I could chew it. This is not an exaggeration. The special tamale was a flaccid, rubbery, flavorless mess.
I ordered the day’s special: a whole red snapper deep fried with garlic butter. First, the presentation was off-putting – served upright like it was swimming and curved into a “C” shape – and so overcooked that it was hard to flatten it out to actually eat it. If there was anything impressive about the dish, I’d say it was that anyone could so profoundly overcook something without it turning black. I couldn’t carve through it with a steak knife.
Speaking of “steak”… my husband ordered it. It was pot roast, not steak. Braised, mushy, slimy, pot roast. “Fork tender” if you will, but gross.
This entire dining experience was regrettable. Our poor server… We gave her 30% and advised her to find another job immediately. If other local establishments are looking for great, charismatic, knowledgeable servers, hire the good people being forced to serve the garbage at El Despecho. You’ll be making the world a better place.
