Adding more classic comfort foods would go a long way, especially given the location. Items like meatloaf or brats with kraut feel like natural fits and would really lean into the up north vibe. Wild rice based dishes also feel like a must, particularly during the colder months. Hearty comfort foods such as chicken pot pie, shepherd’s pie, or open faced hot beef or hot turkey sandwiches with mashed potatoes and gravy would really elevate the menu. A loaded baked potato would also be a great addition.
For something a little more fun and uniquely up north, an “Up North Sampler” platter (i.e., cup of soup, half grilled cheese or mini patty melt quarter, mini chicken pot pie or pot pie filling with biscuit, and pulled pork or hot beef slider with gravy) or a “Flight of Hotdishes” lets guests try a few classic comfort dishes in one order and could be standout options.
A few additional salad options for lighter fare would also help round things out. Options like a chopped chicken salad, a Cobb-style salad, or a wild rice and cranberry salad would all complement the menu nicely and still fit the overall theme.
Soup offerings are another area that could be strengthened, as the only time soup seems to be offered is if it’s the special. A soup of the day paired with a rotating staple such as tomato, French onion, or chicken noodle would be especially appealing, particularly during the colder months.
One other thought, the local grocery store makes fantastic homemade pizzas, and it would be great to see the Woodshed support a local business by serving those. The pizzas currently offered are mediocre at best and feel comparable to frozen options like Jack’s or Tombstone, which doesn’t match the potential of the space.
Right now, the great servers and the setting are doing most of the heavy lifting. Introducing more variety and a few standout dishes, especially those that embrace classic comfort food and an up-north feel, would elevate the entire experience. With a more distinctive menu to match the great service, the Woodshed could truly shine.
The specials are always so delicious. I’ve been to some of the top tier restaurants around here and I can say the owner could out cook any of those chefs.
It’s usually jumping through a lot of hoops to get the current menu online, but even if they just had a website that was up to date, I’m sure they would get more takeout orders.
