This place is truly engrained in the soul of Ann Arbor—that is before Ann Arbor became so corporate. If you are looking for soul, an experience with texture, and with philosophy and meaning, you will find good refuge here.
Even more, the food and people are superb. We have been visit for years with our family. Our kids grew up knowing that with great passion and works often has great people.
You can find great cuisine that is vegetarian or fully plant based. Enjoy a buffet style meal where you pay by the ounce. Enjoy a snack or a feast at this must stop in downtown Ann Arbor.

I’ve been going here for years and it has been the same. It is a literal hole in the wall. buffet only sold by weight and best for takeout. It is a very very old building. Nothing wasted on aesthetics.
Still the food is pretty good and you are not overwhelmed by choices. There are about about eight things on the buffet. You can get a few add-ons like none or Lassi.

Located in an old building with lots of charm and character. The owner is very nice. I was so excited to see all the vegan options. I really appreciate that the vegan options were labeled clearly and it’s eco-friendly. I love the collection of vegan desserts. I enjoyed the vegan mango lassi. The buffet is mostly vegan. From the buffet items, I recommend the sag dal and channa masala.

There’s a few uppity people leaving poor reviews for this gem, so I have to give my input. Been coming here since before the pandemic. Never had a bad experience going to Earthen Jar. The owners are very friendly, and the food is great. Conveniently located next to the underground parking.

Every single item on the menu is fantastic. The quality of the food by itself would merit Earthen Jar 5 stars, but the genuine kindness of the staff makes it a one of a kind establishment. Each meal is prepared with care, and are mostly vegan so it’s an all around great place. Highly recommend!

I’ve been coming here my entire life and I can’t say enough good things about Earthen Jar. They are always warm and welcoming here! Obviously the food is amazing. Pictured below is my delicious plate and a soy mango lassi on the right. They have my favorite Channa Masala of any restaurant and their Mattar Paneer is also amazing – two of my favorite items but you can’t go wrong with anything else. Love it 🙂

The food was wonderful and so was the staff. All but two of the dishes were vegan and they were amazing.
I wish I lived closer to Ann Arbor, I’d easily become a regular.
Will definitely be eating here again before the end of our vacation.

It is a self serve all vegetarian Indian restaurant with vegan options. It is open only two days of the week, Thursdays and Fridays. We were fortunate we visited when it was open. We had to park one street away. The entry door shuts very loud. The first thing you see on entering is the garbage bin. The food is homely and tasty. It is on the pricier side, charged by the pound and costs $10.99 per pound. Bread has to be ordered separately.

I wanted to grab a little lunch to take to the Arboretum & I came across this lovely establishment
Literally the best Indian cuisine I’ve ever eaten!
The staff is super friendly and helpful.
The Samosa is perfectly spiced and fresh with a variety of chutneys to choose from… I went with a coconut chutney & it’s super yum.
Don’t forget to get some naan & the Mango Lassi!

Earthen Jar serves up the best Indian food in Ann Arbor. Everything is vegetarian (and most are vegan) but you won’t miss the meat. The curries and masalas are warm-your-heart, and stick-to-your-bones kind of dishes that you can only achieve with family recipes and home-like cooking. The sag dal is not to be missed. In addition, the owners are the nicest people. Photo of their pre-packaged meals. If you can’t make it downtown, look for their products at Argus Farm Stop, Arbor Farm Market, and the People’s Co-op, among others.
