I am giving this place five stars not because it will blow you away with its creative take on Italian American cuisine. It won’t. But for an old fashioned Italian American New York style meal you can’t ask for much more than what you’ll get at Gene’s. From the old New York atmosphere, to the white table cloths, to the expertly made cocktails, to the efficient service to the rarely seen anymore relish tray this place gives you a sense of what New York was like fifty years ago. Very good ceasar salad and chicken parm. Excellent chocolate mousse for dessert. This is a must try nyc experience.

Came here expecting a hearty old-school italian meal and it was *mostly* great but not as I had expected. I went simple and got the spaghetti and meatballs. The noodles were pretty thin and the sauce was good but nothing amazing. So overall good but not the fully authentic feeling I was expecting

Really great old-school Italian find. You can tell when you walk in that the place has looked the same for decades. Note the worn slots in the stone stairs at the front door that can only come from millions of footsteps over many, many years. And you can also identify its tenure via the regulars who know the staff well.

They start you off with bread, and something I’ve never seen elsewhere – a plate of iced raw veggies (carrots, celery, radish). This was a refreshing touch. The Shrimp alla Gene’s was a mighty tasty appetizer cooked in a creamy white wine sauce. You might want to save some of your bread to use to mop it up. The pastas are exactly what you’d expect – homemade, fresh, piping hot. Don’t miss the seafood, too.

I have no complaints and only praise for Gene’s. It was a lovely dinner.

Gene’s had the aesthetic of everything I was hoping for upon making the reservation, but they shockingly fell short on service.

I had a reservation for four, we were sat at a table with three seats, though they quickly brought a fourth seat over. We were not provided with a drink menu, though after asking for one we received one. 15 minutes later our waiter came to take our drinks orders.

He didn’t seem to like us very much, as after we put our drink orders in we were greeted with a new waiter who had a much better attitude. We were served bread and vegetables on the house before receiving our appetizers: calamari & mozzarella with red peppers. All of it delicious. As for the drinks, I enjoyed my peroni. But the specialty drinks (dirty martinis & old fashioned) left a lot to be desired as reported.

As for the entrees, we all enjoyed them very much. I can especially vouch for the gnocchi pesto, very very good.

The ambiance is awesome, the restaurant has that old school feel that you just don’t get from most Italian restaurants these days. The bus boys were on top of their game, and the second waiter we got was very nice. But it’s hard to shake how we were treated for the first 25 minutes of our entry. We just didn’t feel like valued customers.

As much as I hate to say it, I dont think we would go back. Our experiences at other NYC eateries has been so top notch, with great food as well, to come back to Gene’s unfortunately. If you have a reservation and are reading this though, don’t cancel. The food is very good and I’m hoping this was just a one off experience.

This old-school Italian restaurant is a true hidden gem, offering classic Italian fare in a cozy, intimate setting. The tenure of the service staff speaks to their commitment, and bartender Franco is simply amazing—mixing drinks with skill and charm that enhances the whole experience. The menu is no-frills, but that’s what makes it so reliable; you know you’ll get delicious, authentic dishes every time. If you’re looking for a place with a warm, inviting atmosphere and consistently great food, this spot is a must-visit.

Best meal of my NY visit. The manicoti was perfection, silky and smooth, with a classic sauce cooked to perfection! Great atmosphere and the staff was the epitome of old world charm missing in most establishments these days. Thank you for an incredible experience!

The atmosphere is that of a pleasant, upscale Italian restaurant. It was warm and full. I thought the food was horrible though – everything was suffused in cheese. The crab cakes were made with mozzarella or some similar cheese mixed in, which I have never encountered before. Then the “veal chop” turned out to be a bunch of mozzarella wrapped with a thin scallopini cut around a veal chop bone. Then breaded and fried, so it ended up looking like a corn dog. Service was unremarkable.

We recently stumbled upon Gene’s Restaurant, and it has instantly earned a spot on our go-to list for Italian dining in NYC Soho area. From the moment we walked in, we were struck by its warm, classic atmosphere—a true old-school New York Italian gem that feels both authentic and inviting. The service was attentive; every dish was exceptional. The flavors were rich and traditional. Gene’s balances charm, consistency, and culinary excellence.

What can one say about a place that’s been around for over 100 years?
From the well worn steps to the classic old school bar and dinning room this place reeks of authenticity. The regulars have their regular seats but we like eating at the bar by the window watching the neighbours go by.

Never change ❤️

Food was great. Atmosphere not good- there was a patron sitting alone, seems like he’s there a lot who had the gall to be talking shit about us within minutes of us sitting down. Food was great, but I wish the sad old man wasn’t there judging and complaining like an old fart when you just want to enjoy your meal.
