When I was a kid in West Tennessee, there was an individual who took a trip out west and came back with the notion of opening a Taco John’s in my hometown. In fact, he opened two. This was a matter of months before Taco Bell came to my hometown. I remember on Tuesdays, tacos were either $0.99 or maybe two for $0.99. Anyway, I associate the place with great memories from high school. Imagine my surprise when I flew into Rapid City, South Dakota, and saw the Taco John’s here. I had to try it! I ordered three hard tacos. The salsa is no longer in a bar type setting, where you dip it into a cup, and what was in the foil packets was not as good as the fresh salsa. The old salsa was absolutely amazing!! The taco shells still had a very thin, fresh, and crispy crunch. They really are better than a Taco Bell taco, and what I realized is that these are probably the closest match to a homemade taco, a la Old El Paso. Certainly, it was worth the walk from the hotel, and it left me feeling very nostalgic. You should definitely try these tacos even if you didn’t grow up with them.

1st time eating here. We weren’t sure we were going to eat herer because the reviews really varied. Our conclusion is that it’s tacos & tots.. taco bell is better & it’s a bit cheaper than tacos john’s

The potato oles were the star. I liked the guacamole as well. Overall the food was decent. The service was great. We were met with great kindness. Service was quick as well. The place was clean and had a good atmosphere.

I don’t usually leave reviews, but I felt this needed to be said. I visited this restaurant recently and was incredibly disappointed—not with the food, but with the way the staff treated each other.
While dining, I witnessed what appeared to be senior employees (possibly managers) yelling at and belittling younger staff members right in front of customers. It was unprofessional, uncomfortable, and frankly unacceptable. No one deserves to be treated like that, especially in a work environment.
A restaurant’s atmosphere is about more than just food—it’s also about how people are treated. If management allows this kind of behavior, it reflects poorly on the entire establishment. I won’t be returning, and I hope the ownership takes a serious look at how their team is being managed.

Staff was incredibly rude. Said their grill wasn’t working. That’s understandable, these things happen. What’s not understandable is being rude about it. My brother asked what was available due to the grill not working and the woman just mumbled something under her breath, was short with him, and walked off. We just left. We’re also not locals and just passing through. Not a good look for this franchise that we were trying for the first time.

Food was slow. Tried to get me to pay for another order. Items were missed. The worst part is that I got home, starred eating my chicken burrito and realized part of the chicken was still raw.

I don’t like to leave negative reviews but I’ve given up on this taco johns location. It’s always a hit or miss. The potato oles always taste like old oil which tells me they don’t change it out enough. Today I got 2 junior breakfast burritos. It cost me 8.50. I went to the location in Sturgis a month ago and it was around 6. I get it, everywhere is getting more expensive. What really annoyed me though was that the burritos, which are already really tiny, were only 1/3 full. They don’t even fill them up. It’s mostly just the tortilla. And I called and they just used the excuse that the burritos are tiny. They wont acknowledge that theyre trying to be cheap and save product. It’s a waste of money. Don’t waste your time on this location.

Everyone working on 11/13/25 during the power outage did AMAZING!! It’s not easy keeping up during a normal shift, let alone during a power outage that had a large portion of the city without power. Thanks for rocking it out and rolling with the punches!

Didn’t get any food. Waited in line for 5 minutes and it didn’t move. 4 cars ahead of me. I left. Clean up your parking lot too. It’s not appealing at all. Is it really worth nickel and diming customers to let a $30 order drive off? Short staffed? Broken equipment? Tough to give it a shot again when you can’t even try it. Smh.
