I don’t know where some of these people who say that this is the biggest cod they’ve ever seen & the most delicious have been. They probably haven’t gone to Fort Kenny Pub in Rond Rock. It doesn’t even compare.
Don’t let me start on the Sheppard pie. Ok, I’ll start. I was excited to see that they used lamb. I was thinking authentic. The portion for the price was Small! The potatoes on the top was not even toasted. The inside tasted like wolf brand chili topped woth mashed potatoes. It was not good at all.
My husband also got the creamy cabbage. I guess I was thinking southern cabbage but when we got it, it looked like coleslaw in a bowl of milk but it was Warm. It was gross.
My son ate the smash burger & it was actually good but they only had a sprinkle of fries.
I do not recommend the Sheppard pie nor the cream cabbage. The cod was good but not great & a bigger portion would have been better. Finally the burger was good if you want to go for the experience.
The overall setting is warm and inviting—a perfect spot for a relaxed meal. But the real stars of the visit were the plates coming out of the kitchen.
The undisputed champion was the Fish and Chips. They were, simply put, PHENOMENAL. The generous portion of cod was encased in a golden, perfectly crisp batter that was light and airy, while the fish inside remained moist and flaky. This is a must-try dish for anyone visiting.
We also sampled the house burger, which was a very strong contender. Juicy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked, it was a genuinely satisfying take on a classic.
Grumpy George’s has done a superb job blending a great, evocative atmosphere with truly outstanding pub fare. If you’ve been wanting to visit since the redone, don’t wait any longer—it’s a clear success.
Seating was readily available both at the bar and for tables, our party of 3 tried the Fish N Chips (because you have to give a new pub’s fish n chips a taste), their Grumpy George’s smash burger, their scotch egg and sticky toffee pudding. The service was great, definitely commendable. Their smash burger was good, was a double patty and well portioned, their fries/chips were well cooked, cut, and seasoned (seasoning especially! This goes for the fish n chips too) and the burger had a good portion of caramelized onions and an… Interesting sauce. It was not bad but we couldn’t figure out what exactly the sauce was supposed to be. Still good! The fish and chips were commendable. There’s definitely better out there, but not much. The tartar sauce was delicious and the fried fish was nice and crispy. The scotch egg was probably the weakest thing we ordered, the egg itself was good, as was the fried exterior but the sausage bits in between left something to be desired. The sticky toffee pudding was definitely the star of the show. Whenever toffee pudding is available at restaurants like this I always try one and I must say this is one of the best I’ve had at a pub. The ice cream on the side was very nice and sweet. The syrup was delicious and the cake portion was perfect. Get the toffee pudding.
We were pleasantly surprised when the bill came; the waitress had taken off the food and just charged us with drinks. When we pointed this out to the waitress, she said “of course.” We applaud that kind of service.
We hope the restaurant will improve their food offerings.
I just got out of the hospital so I’m craving good food! My Hubby and I also missed Valentine’s Day because I was in the hospital so we needed a nice outing.
The restaurant has a ramp that is handicap accessible (thank you!) and a small area of outside seating. The inside is cozy and stylish and looks like the traditional English Pubs we’ve seen on TV.
The servers were absolutely great! They were attentive, friendly, and on top of everything! There was hardly any wait time for our appetizers and main dishes. It wasn’t very crowded because we got there before the dinner rush, but there were still a decent amount of customers.
The Food: Since we’ve never had traditional British food, we weren’t sure what to expect. All of Gordon’s menu items from the show were available. The menu is short and sweet, but still a variety. The prices are just a tad higher than your average sit down restaurant, but the servings and food were well worth it. We ordered the Scotch Egg of course with piccalilli and it was delicious! We’ve never had one and it was a great first experience!
My Hubby ordered the Lamb Shepherd’s pie, and I ordered Fish and Chips with a side of Creamed Cabbage. Hubby really enjoyed his Shepard’s Pie! The Lamb adds a great, unique taste as opposed to the ground beef we usually use.
My Fish and Chips plate came with Tartar sauce, Ketchup, and a small dish of mushy peas! The beer battered fish was one of the largest pieces I’ve ever seen! It was cooked to perfection! It was crispy on the outside and melt in your mouth, buttery tender on the inside! It was delicious! The fries were also cooked well. I had a drink called “Fancy a Cuppa Pimm’s” which came in an iced chiled copper cup that kept it cool! The Strawberry and Cucumber flavors were great and I enjoyed it!
However, in my opinion, the absolute STAR of the show was the Creamed Cabbage!! I’ve never had it before, but I love cabbage. I’ve eaten cabbage many different ways here in the south, but never like this! Let me tell you..it was THE most delicious cabbage dish I’ve ever eaten! It had cream, cabbage, peas, and small pieces of smoked bacon. This combination is fit for the Gods! I’m not kidding when I say that I was so sad when I ate the last of it. I would drive hours just to have it again! The Sticky Toffee Pudding dessert was also very delicious!
If I had to offer any constructive criticism, it would be what other people are saying about the lack of seasoning. The Shepherds Pie and the fish batter were a little under seasoned. I’m not a big fan of restaurants putting a lot of salt, pepper, or spicy stuff on things. If a customer wants more, we can just use the salt and pepper provided at the table instead of it being served too salty or too spicy..So, when I say it wasn’t seasoned enough, I mean it was less than the minimal amount of any type of seasoning needed for that dish.
However, because everything was cooked perfectly, the lack of seasoning was forgivable. We just salt and peppered it ourselves. I’ve never had Malt Vinegar, so I didn’t know what it was when I saw it on our table. I read today that it goes well on the fish, so I’ll try that next time too. I wish the server would have mentioned what it was and its purpose for us non British folk!
Also, our table had a broken leg that wobbled a bit. Not a huge deal.
Overall, it was a great experince! It was especially a treat to taste Gordon Ramsay’s recipes from his traditional British background. He taught the cooks here well!
It was also good to see the familiar staff.
We’ve been telling all of our friends about this unique British Pub experience as well as the great food! I have to go back to the hospital for another surgery soon and will be craving good food again after. So, we’d love to return to the Grumpy George!
The service and staff were exceptional and very attentive. The food itself came out quickly, warm and tasty. The atmosphere was cozy.
We tried the scotch egg 5/5.
Shepherd’ pie 4/5. Cooked great, but a little under seasoned.
Fish and Chips 4/5. Cooked to perfection with the fries, but again slightly under seasoned.
Creamed cabbage and pees with Smoked bacon 5/5. Best cabbage my wife ever had! I don’t particularly like cabbage but I loved this dish as well.
Only major complaint was the physical table were we sat to eat. Very wobbly, and when I inspected it, there was a strip of material attempting to balance one of the legs.
Scotch Egg (10/10) – Absolute perfection. The yolk was beautifully runny, the seasoning spot-on, and the crispy exterior was just right. The delicious pickle topping on the side added a great tangy contrast.
Fish and Chips (9/10) – Nearly flawless. Served piping hot, with a golden, crispy batter. The very ends were slightly too crunchy, and the fish itself could have used just a touch more seasoning, but overall, excellent. The tartar sauce was outstanding.
Mushy Peas (10/10) – A surprise highlight! Incredibly flavorful and far superior to versions I’ve had elsewhere. A must-try.
Sticky Toffee Pudding (10/10) – Moist, rich, and decadent. The sauce was divine, and the pairing with ice cream made it even better.
English Garden Cocktail (8/10) – A unique and refreshing drink with a pleasant floral note. However, it tasted slightly watered down and could have used a bit more intensity.
Overall, The Grumpy George delivered an amazing British comfort food experience. The minor critiques didn’t take away from an otherwise stellar meal. I’d absolutely return!
I’m not sure why the menu was so limited, no Rueben sandwich either..
