We waited nearly an hour just to be seated and attended. Service felt disorganized from the start. Appetizers were brought out without plates, leaving us unsure how we were expected to eat.
I ordered a ribeye gordita, and the presentation was unacceptable. The meat was simply piled on top with no care, no balance, no garnish, no sauce, and no cheese. The dish looked rushed and poorly executed. Considering that prices have increased, the quality and service no longer match what is being charged.
It’s honestly sad to see a place that once had so much heart lose the care and attention that made it special. I truly hope management takes this feedback seriously.
It is clear there has been a change in management and staff, and not for the better. The hostess struggled to communicate in Spanish and kept mixing in English words throughout the interaction. In a restaurant that presents itself with strong cultural roots, that lack of fluency and professionalism was surprising and off-putting.
What was even more frustrating was the lack of communication regarding reservations. Apparently reservations were required for Valentine’s Day dinner, but nowhere was that advertised. Not on social media, not on their website, and not posted anywhere visible to customers. That is a major oversight for one of the busiest dining holidays of the year.
To make matters worse, they ran out of chips by 7 pm. We also overheard staff mentioning they had run out of guacamole as well. On Valentine’s Day, one of the most predictable high-volume restaurant days of the year, running out of basic items like chips and guacamole shows a serious lack of preparation and planning. Holidays like this require extra inventory and staffing, not the bare minimum.
The entire experience felt disorganized, underprepared, and poorly managed. Valentine’s Day is meant to feel special, and this felt anything but.
Unfortunately, after this experience, we will not be returning.
We ordered “Carne en su Jugo” among other things.
On the expensive side, particularly when adding service charge of 18%, and then tips on top of it.
We were a party of 4.
Most likely not coming back due to excessive fees.
Our waiter barely checked on us, which added to the overall experience. While you had other waiters recording the food and people at the restaurant. One important thing to note is to check your receipt carefully. A tip was already included without any notice. In the past, the previous owners would only include gratuity for larger parties and always made it clear. (We were only 3 so not a large party & all in one check) The prices on our receipt also did not match the prices listed on the menu, so be sure to keep an eye on that.
La Rioja has been one of our favorite Mexican restaurants for years, and, although they have changed owners, they still create some of the tastiest dishes we’ve had in the region! The atmosphere of the restaurant has changed just a little, but the cooks are the same and the food is delicious. It is a little different from many local Mexican restaurants in that the dishes are a little bit more up-scale and refined, and the emphasis on finer cuts of steak and delicious sauces is something you won’t find at most family restaurants. You will not find ground beef on the menu here – the tacos come with grilled steak or strip cuts, and they are delicious. The steaks and grilled meats are served with an excellent chimichurri, on a sizzling stone, with ample sides. The Guac was great, and served, as before with individual fried tortillas. Portions are large – for such good quality, the portion size is AMPLE! My rellenos were well prepared, sauced, and twice what I could eat. (Today’s lunch left-overs are going to be great!)
In our experience, service was excellent. Francisco was delightful, attentive and made sure we were getting anything we wanted. The horchatas were delicious. The food was well seasoned. The dishes came with cilantro and onion, pico de gallo, salsa, or habanero sauce if you wanted it. I did, and it was potent but perfect. The dessert custard was talked about all the way home!
If there was a hiccup after the change of hands, it looks like the new owner has fixed things nicely. We all four loved our meals and can’t wait to go back. The menu is a considerable step up from the typical “taco, enchilada, fajita” fare, but still robust and delicious. With the emphasis on steak cuts and great meat dishes it may be a little more expensive than many typical Mexican Restaurants but it is well worth it. We will be back, and right away!
